Historicon game 5
France 1940, Stop Them at the Meuse
Game #5 is a French attempt to destroy the bridges at a German Meuse crossing point. A flight of Breguet 693s escorted by MS 406s and Hawk 75s must get through a flight of Me 109s to reach the Meuse bridges.
The photos begin well into the initial engagement. As you can see, a MS 406 is going down while a Me 109 is burning brightly.
Two of the French escort are out of position, well behind the incoming Germans.
Perhaps the burning 109 didn’t see the Hawk 75 coming at him from between the Breguets. The Hawk pilot does what he can with his out gunned aircraft vs the Messerschmitt.
As the Germans regroup the French fighters are still too high to help out. The bombers seem to be on their own.
The leading two Breguets as no more. The next two don’t like what they see ahead.
It may be peaceful at the moment but the Breguet crews know the storm is coming.
Two French 406s pinch a Hun and send it on a one way trip into a forest below.
The Breguets help downing another 109 but it’s not enough. Soon they are overwhelmed and they to share the fate of the leading pair.
The Germans have protected their bridgehead and their offensive into France rolls on.
Victory to the Germans. (but at a heavy cost losing 5 pilots in the process)
