IJN White - help!

I am slowly returning from my hiatus of not painting and I am getting ready to paint a couple D3A Vals. I am not quite sure that the IJN used a pure white though it always seems a bit off. Could be dirt and grime, but I was curious if anyone know anything different. If not I'm just going to go pure white and maybe use a very light wash to give it that off white tone.

It's not white, more a very pale ash-gray. Look for Vallejo 71.311 IJN Ash Grey or similar.
