Game 4, Saturday noon, "Hunting Martians". This scenario is an attack on a Martian landing zone. The earthlings are out to destroy the Martian base. One large round Martian base surrounded with four terrain pieces that could trip up the Tripods.

After a couple of moves into the game the Martians have spread out around their base. The incoming planes jocky around to try to get in shots at the unshielded sides.

A cannon armed SPAD XII takes a shot but comes up empty. This beautiful SPAD that I just bought off of Clipper had the worst luck, I may have to return it. You've never seen so many zeros shot from a cannon!

Even after being strongly warned to stay away from the terrain, a Martian had to find out for himself. He was lucky no plane was in position to shoot him while the shields were down.

The Martians are circling the wagons around their base. One rocket armed N16 was destroyed in the process of releasing it's rockets at the base. A close call for the Martians. The N16 will be back. (respawned at the top of the photo you can only see the base)

Game 5, Saturday 4pm, "If it floats it will be attacked", should have been called, "If it floats it will be ignored". Here we have an Italian raid on an Austrian island installation. When the Italians arrive they find an unexpected Austrian gunboat nestled between the islands. The gunboat belongs to Karl which he got from Neil (Skafloc).

Familiar masks join in antoher game of Wings.

Ah-ha! A gunboat is spotted! Decisions-decisions, keep to the plan of attacking the facilities or sink the gunboat? (My lead into the scenario already spoiled this attempt at adding tension to the fight didn't it?)

Overall the battle was quite tame. There was little shooting or the usual destruction mayhem. The Italians may have been distracted by the unexpected gunboat and did minimal damage to the installations. The Austrians cheered as the Italians turned for home without accomplishing their mission.

The final game, game 6, Sunday 9am. A French CAP patrol engages a German flight of Stukas intent on attacking the fortified artillery positions on the Marfee Heights behind Sedan. A fierce fight follows when a flight of Bf 109s join in.

Being Sunday morning we were correct in not expecting much of a turnout. I had 3 players while Jim's WGF game drew the same. Jim's game started an hour later at 10. He started off flying in my game so I'd have 4 pilots but left when his game started. I took over pushing the planes he had started with. French pilots flew a D.520 and a MS.406 while the Germans flew 2 109s and 2 Stukas with 2 bombs each. There were 8 fortified artillery positions that the Germans were out to destroy.

    The bad guys.

If I recall correctly the Germans destroyed 3 positions and damaged 2. In the air the Germans were definitely ahead. It was a draw or slightly in favor of the Germans.

Sadly after this game everything was packed up and goodbyes were exchanged as we all headed for home. The ball is already rolling for nexzt year's Origins. I hope more of you can come and join in. It's undoubtedly one of the best events for Wings and Sails there is.

I would just like to thank those members who put on such a splendid series of games in support of our hobby. I know how much time and effort goes into preparing these games let alone running them over several days. No doubt the games masters will be putting the participents forward for the appropriate Origins medals on the usual submissions requests.

    Great scenarios, as always, Peter.
Interesting mix of planes - nice to see your French especially.
The mats are gorgeous (meant to mention that on your Sails game as well) and I really like the cockpit canopy of the smoking Stuka.

P.S. I liked the Martian one as well.

Next year you have to attend!

I know some of who are aerodrome members but not the players who I have had occasionally at my tables. I'll go through my photos and submit all that I recognize as members.

It certainly looks like you all had a great time at Origins. Did Ares perchance have a stall there and. if so, were you able to extract any news from them?

That's why I adjust the deck to 4 zeros, Peter, so it's more proportional, like the MGs, as a direct firing weapon rather than a flak gun.

They had a booth, and staff running games in the area, but I didn't have a chance to ask. There was an extra level of confusion (from GAMA mostly), and the heads were sorting things out.
Jim may have gotten something, though he didn't tell us. From past experience, the Ares USA head knows little more than we do here.

The version I heard last time it came up on the side when I was discussing other work I do for them--and remember, this is my personal recollection NOT an official announcement--is that IIRC this time we only get the balloons and maybe some "paper" accessories like AA-gun cards, no nice neat "Solitaire Game in a Box" like original Balloon Busters was.
