Default The games of Origins 2021

Hi all. Here is some of what I had the pleasure to experience at Origins 2021.

Ahh, the registration line. I got there early enough so it took only 10-15 minutes.

The first game of the show was run by Glenn (Jago85). Everyone loves a Med Cruise. Bf 109s vs Martlets.
I flew a Martlet and splashed a 109 at the cost of 2 Martlets!

Some veteran Wings pilots, Karl on the left and Phil on the right.

A fun game by Glenn on a great looking mat.

    More to come....

I'd swear that map looks almost like the Axis & Allies Miniatures "Island Fortress Betio" scenario...

Great to see some of the action at Origins, and a great game next to my heart Malta.
    Thanks for posting Peter.

It's one of the ones made by Luis (IBERIAN SHADOW), before he passed away.

Origins went extremely well this year considering the situation. Attendance to the event was at 45% of what it normally would have been. Even with this everyone did a great job. The following people helped to make it a successful event. Peter (Teaticket), Karl (Jager), Glen (Jago85), and Ray (The G Dog) did an outstanding job running top notch events. They all came well prepare and went with things as situations arose. I am very proud to be gaming with these guys. This year we also worked with Ares as we have before. It was another incredible year of cooperation between our two groups. I must thank Olivia and Nathan for being so super to work with. It's hard to believe in about eight months we will be doing it again. The next time we will have a Lend-Lease member present. We will also be holding the first Harry Paul Materne III Memorial Tournament. I can't wait for both these things to happen.

Assuming there is not some type of misfortune, I am there next year.

    Glad it went well Jim!

Many thanks for posting the photos.

I'm glad to hear the event went well, Pandemic notwithstanding.

It's great to see folks gathering around a "Wings" table and having fun (and yes, that's a superb map!).

Glad to see from your AAR's what a load of fun you all had. Wish I could've joined you but between severely compromised immune system and new full knee replacement my recovery negated my ability to join the festivities...looking forward to return to duty and joining you next year! Truly, the best part of ORIGINS is not the games but the camaraderie. Congrats on pulling it off.

Here are a few shots of the first game I ran on Thursday afternoon. Aerodrome Attack. Jasta 30 Pfalz DIIIas are out to strafe an American aerodrome but a flight of N28s don't think that's a good idea.

Here is the second game I ran, Friday at 9am. A WGS France 1940 game, "Destroy the Bridge". Here the French have sent a string of bombers out to destroy a bridge over the Meuse. The four Breguet and Potez bombers had to fly from one corner of the 4' x 6' mat to the other to have a chance to make their drop. For the French to win they had to get three off the table, two for a draw.
The bombers were flown as drones, only flying straight and slow as they were at the beginning of their run.

Each of the six pilots flew two planes. A MS 406 and a Hawk 75 for the French, 109Es for the Germans. Planes were re-spawned 2 cards after being downed.

Before the game I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Durst from our Thursday night online gaming squadron. He was sporting a nice T-shirt. Ah...I really have no idea what it means.
The front honors Mike Jacobs, the back....

The tail end Charlie bomber went down and as the game ended I surmised the last bomber would have been caught up with and also downed. We agreed it ended in a draw.
Once the Germans caught on and dropped to engagement altitude the battle heated up nicely. It was great to get some of my French air force on the table for the first time.

Game 3, Friday at noon, SOG, "Where the Lines Meet".

Here we have a French attempt to break the blockade when a squall blew the Royal Navy off station. The RN recovered quicker than the French had hoped and caught them along the coast just before they could make their break. Each side had 4 SOLs. Weather gauge in favor of guess who? (RN of course) The French start off just south of an island off the French coast of Brittany.

I have a nice water mat with islands that I used in place of the SOG mats.

Here are the starting positions. The French must get 3 ships off into the open ocean off the far edge to claim victory. Pics from each side's view.

The French started off with some interesting tacking causing the RN to make fun of French seamanship.

The lead French ship keeps on its course as the RN break their formation. Seems they are caught a bit flat footed.

The lead French ship has the trailing RN ships confused and they change course and collide. Not to be outdone the third French SOL runs aground on the large island....twice! The excuse of looking for stranded ladies seemed a bit thin.

A few broadsides are fired but the French get past a RN SOL.

The lead French SOL crossed the T and pummels a RN ship.
The fourth French SOL heads to the left leaving two RN ships behind. Now it is the French needling the RN about their seamanship skills as a RN SOL runs aground on the island.

The lead French SOL entangles with a RN SOL. With both crews severely depleted neither elect to board.
The next shot has the RN SOL striking it's colors! Vive l' Emperor!

The RN SOL runs aground for a second time. Must be looking for those rumored poor stranded French ladies.
Luckily for the RN the lead French SOL also strikes it's colors after a well placed broadside. God Save the King!
A little too late though as now the RN is out of position and three French make it to the open ocean.

Before the game started I had clearly made the point that the ships will move faster than you think and we still had 4 brushes with the island. To the credit of the French captain he kept his head and did get out to the open sea.

I was schooled on a rule I had missed. My thanks go out to the captain that pointed out this to me as this was the first official Sails game I have run at a convention. Back to the rulebook to find out any other things I may have messed up.

It was a fun game and I look forward to running more in the future.

Ugh, thanks Tim. I'll get right on it, but these are not what you should be looking at as there are lots of SAILs in these photos.

Peter, would you mind if I copied the game that shall have no name to the Anchorage, so that the "Boaty boys", as Chris (Wingco) Lambert insists on calling us, may enjoy your wonderful pictures. Or of course you could join us and post them yourself.

    More great pics.
The Sails game also reminds me of one we tried on Thursday Night a couple of months back.

Before the game started I had clearly made the point that the ships will move faster than you think and we still had 4 brushes with the island.
I remember we had the same issue.
Chris might remember it better than most ...

I have had that intermittently too Peter but not on this thread.
You might just try hitting the edit button and then returning to the thread straight away by pressing the save button.
    That works for me mostly.

Ray Garbee ran another nautical game with some wonderful flying boats and float planes. Here are some photos of planes and the action. I can't tell you what happened as I was flying in another game at the time.

Glenn Francis ran a Russian Front WGS game, 109s vs P-39s. The Russian P-39s out gunned the poor 109Es. Three of us flew 2 planes each. I flew a pair of P-39s and ended with 4 kills to 1 of my P-39s downed. It wasn't a fair fight but who wants that?

Peter, Great pictures!!! You know, Old guy (Bill Weber) photo bombed all of your pictures of Ray Garbee's (G Dog) flying boats. LOL! Just have to poke Bill. He loves that blue shirt with the Red Baron Fokker Dr.I on it! I have to admit, it is a really cool shirt!

Yeah, I'd line up a shot and Bill would appear out of nowhere! That is a great shirt, how could I not get it as many photos as possible?

    Ah ha!
Now I have seen the real "Boaty boys." Pete.
Chris must have been talking about them! and I also see that Tim weathered the storm without having to resort to the Dried Frog Pills. His therapy is having some good results. When he comes over for Origins next year he may even be able to walk past a table with ships that have sails without having a relapse.

Nice to see seaplanes in action. The British Felixstowe really dominates the table. Any idea what the small grey US Navy biplane is?

The four Breguet and Potez bombers had to fly from one corner of the 4' x 6' mat to the other to have a chance to make their drop. For the French to win they had to get three off the table, two for a draw.
The bombers were flown as drones, only flying straight and slow as they were at the beginning of their run.

Each of the six pilots flew two planes. A MS 406 and a Hawk 75 for the French, 109Es for the Germans. Planes were re-spawned 2 cards after being downed.

    A Morane 406 pays heavily for a close encounter with a 109.

Even if everything is not back to the way it used to be, it's nice to see that life is going on again after this Pandemic, this Origins Game Fair seems to be a perfect success !

Thank you Peter also for publishing this game with these French Warbirds sometimes too rare on the gaming tables

The small grey US plane is a Hanriot HD.2. The US Navy used them along the channel and other places.
