It was my turn to choose the scenario for last Tuesday night and I just happened to be scrolling through the Wings of Glory group on Facebook and found an interesting post titled 'Duck Fight' - who could resist a title like this I ask you?
It looked like a lot of fun and our usual gang of 4 agreed to give it a try.
Here are the rules for the scenario:
Introduction
A duckfight or duck fight, is an aerial battle between fighter aircraft, conducted at close range. Duckfighting first appeared during WW1 shortly after the invention of the aeroplane.
Number of players
2 - unlimited
Equipment
1. Any number of paired single-seaters, preferably from the same era. The fighters in pairs should have similar manoeuvre decks and the same (or very close) hit numbers.
2. One or 2 game mats.
3. Pencil, paper and watch.
4. Enough beer for one hour - optional.
Starting Position
The participants line up on the opposite side of the mat(s).
Special Unofficial Rules
1. It is a points-based scenario, using a pencil and paper to keep track of the score:
1 point any time you fire a long-range shot.
2 points for a short-range shot.
2 points any time you down an opposing plane or it has to respawn for any reason
2 points if your opponent flies off the mat.
2. The downed plane(s) are returned to the game at the start of the next planning phase, starting by their edge and at a minimum distance of 2 rulers away from the closest opposing aircraft.
3. If your plane is on fire and crashes you have to wait one turn before returning to the game.
Victory Conditions
The side with the most points wins after the last completed turn. If there is a tie, the side with the most downed planes wins.
Endgame conditions
The mission time is 1 hour, where the last turn must start before the time limit.
The rules, I discovered later, were Honza's brainchild and the scenario gave us much fun and hilarity last Tuesday night. We flew two aircraft each so there were 8 on the table.
Here are a few photos I took while play was in progress:
The opening shot was from the Entente:
But the Central Powers soon replied in kind:
Of course it rapidly became a whirling furball,
with the Central Powers suffering the first real casualty:
The dance of death continued until the hour was up:
When we tallied the final scores, the Central Powers had 30 points and the Entente 26 - a pretty even outcome but, most of all, the source of much fun and camaraderie!!
Just for the record, here is my score sheet:
