  1. #1

Default Doncaster Battle of Britain 2021 Scenario and AAR

Doncaster 2021 - WWII Mission 2 Brief - Battle of Britain

On the 15th September 1940, at 10:30 AM British radar stations detected a significant build up of aircraft over the Pas de Calais. At 11 AM the Observer Corps reports Do 17s approaching the British Coast escorted by Bf 109s. Spitfires from 92 Sqn rush to intercept the enemy. As the Bf 109s turn to engage the Spitfires, Hurricanes from 303 Sqn scramble to intercept the unprotected bombers.

    Play Area
The play area is 54 x39 inches (2x standard Wings of Glory mats). One of the short edges is declared the AXIS edge.

    Forces
The opposing forces are composed as follows:
    RAF
    3x Spitfire MkI
    3x Hurricane MkI
    2x Large ground targets
    Luftwaffe
    4x Bf 109E-3
    3x Do 17Z-2

The initial disposition of forces is per the picture and description below. “Left” and “right” are used as if the play area is being viewed from the AXIS edge:
    • Bf 109s are placed at altitude 7 in a “finger four” within the right hand half of the mat, within 1.5 rulers of the AXIS edge and with no more than 0.5 ruler spacing between adjacent aircraft.
    • Spitfires are placed in a “vic” formation at altitude 7 within 1 rulers of the right hand edge of the play area, within 0.5 rulers of the centre join between the mats and with no more than 0.5 ruler spacing between adjacent aircraft.
    • 1 Large ground target is placed in the approximate centre of the upper mat (that which does not include the AXIS edge). A second large ground target is placed 0.5 rulers to the left.
    • The Do 17s are placed at altitude 6 in the left hand half of the play area in a “kette” formation at least 1.5 rulers from the AXIS edge, at least 1 ruler from the centre join between the mats and with no more than 0.5 ruler spacing between adjacent aircraft.
    • The hurricanes are placed at altitude 6 in a “vic” formation, wholly within 1 ruler of the central target card and with no more than 0.5 ruler spacing between adjacent aircraft.

    Scoring
Fighter Aircraft are scored as follows at game end:
    • Confirmed kill (0 health) - 10 points
    • Probable kill (=<5 health) - 5 points
    • Damaged (=<10 health) - 2 points

Bomber aircraft are scored as follows at game end:
    • Confirmed kill (0 health) - 15 points to RAF
    • Probable kill (=<5 health) - 10 points to RAF
    • Damaged (=<10 health) - 5 points to RAF
    • Returned to base Damaged (<10 health) - 5 points to Luftwaffe
    • Returned to base Repairable (=>10 health) - 10 points to Luftwaffe

    Bombs are scored as follows:
    • Bombs within red sector - 15 points per load to Luftwaffe
    • Bombs within card - 10 points per load to Luftwaffe
    • Bombing Disrupted (bombs jettisoned or fall >1/2 ruler from target) - 10 points to RAF

    Rules in Effect
The game uses the ADVANCED rules as defined in the Battle of Britain rulebook with the following modifications and optional rules.

    Collisions
    If two overlapping aircraft:
Are both at the same altitude, and
Both either have climb counters (any number) or no climb counters
a collision may occur. In this event, one of the controlling players draws and reveals one ‘A’ damage token, if the value is zero no collision occurs, otherwise both aircraft involved draw a ‘C’ damage. The ‘A’ token is returned to its bag. If more than two aircraft are overlapping, each possible collision is resolved separately.

    Illegal manoeuvres
If a player reveals an illegal manoeuvre, it is replaced by a straight at the current speed and the player draws 1 ‘A’ damage. Additionally that player may not fire during this game turn as the pilot is distracted recovering the aircraft.

    Explosion
Any aircraft that draws an explosion, treats it as zero damage but must draw and apply an additional ‘C’ damage counter.

    Flying Higher
Aircraft can operate up to the maximum altitudes stated in the rulebook.

    Fleeing
With the exception of Luftwaffe aircraft exiting the AXIS side, any aircraft that exits the play area is counted as shot down. Luftwaffe aircraft exiting the AXIS side are removed from play and scored per the game rules.

    Bf 109E
The Bf 109s are subject to the following additional rules:
    • Fuel - The Bf 109s have 30 points of fuel and must exit the AXIS side of the playing area before reaching zero fuel otherwise they are considered shot down.
    • Limited Ammo - The Bf 109s have 4 rounds for the 20mm cannon. When firing the pilot can declare an MG (A/A) shot, or combined MG and Cannon shot (ACC/C). This declaration can be made AFTER measuring for range.

    Do 17z
The Do 17s are subject to the following additional rules:
    • Bombs -The Do-17s carry two bomb loads which may be dropped separately or as a single salvo.
    • Full Load - The Do-17s are subject to the full load penalty until at least one bomb load is dropped.
    • Overdive - The Do-17s may perform an overdive, after all bombs have been dropped or jettisoned (this may be declared on the same turn as the stall that initiates the overdive). On the straight card of the overdive the controlling player draws one A damage representing the stress on the airframe, ignoring any special damage effects.
    • Extended crew damage - per the normal optional rules.

  2. #2

    Default

The brave pilots taking part were:
    RAF
    Rebel flying 2 Hurricanes.
Strangely Brown flying a Hurricane and a Spit
    Red Dragon flying 2 Spits
    Luftwaffe
    Guntruck flying 2 Bf109s
    CamelCrew flying 2 Bf109s
    JohnBiggles flying 2 Do17
    Woof flying 1 Do17

To make it easier for the mixed formations and reduce collisions, each section leader was permitted to show the rest of the section their planned manoeuvre card.

    Round 1

The Spitfires and 109s charged each other at high speed. Red section met the 109 schwarm broadly head on, however the numerical advantage and wider formation of the Germans allowing Guntruck's yellow 3 to make an oblique attack. A, B and C tokens flew in every direction but everyone made it through the first pass, although Red Dragon picked up a nasty headwound on the way.

    Round 2
The Bf109s charged through the RAF formation, I assume with the intent to wheel round behind the Hurricanes. However a miscalculation on the part of Camelcrew's Yellow 14 led to a collision with his schwarm leader and it was too much for his damaged aircraft and Yellow 14 was lost. The Spits performed a half loop ending up perfectly placed behind the schwarm leader and finished him off.

JohnBiggles lead Do-17 and his wingmate began their turn on target, only to be grazed by the lead aircraft from 303 squadron. Everyone survived relatively intact though!

    Round 3
The Spits recovery from their half loop, gave the 109s a chance to evade. Guntruck's Yellow 3 reversed course to get out of the line of fire.

JohnBiggle's lead Do-17 dropped his bombs, as did his wingmate who had little intention of sticking around with the Hurricanes for any longer. Unfortunately their escape plans were ruined with both planes taking severe engine damage and being reduced to slow speed. Woof's Do17 began it's turn onto target and whilst the bomber was relatively unscathed, the Hurricanes remained stubbornly outside it's defensive arcs of fire.

    Round 4

Camelcrew's remaining 109 managed to get behind Reg Dragon's Red3 and at close range the 20mm were unforgiving.

Woof's laggard Do17 dropped it's bombs whilst JohnBiggles' lead pair took another punishing round of fire from 303 Squadron.

    Round 5
The lead Do17's bombs hit the ground, one set within the outer portion of the target cards, the others wide, but no so much as to count towards RAF points. (No photo sorry!)

Camelcrew's Yellow 13 made the mistake of trying to turn inside the remaining Spitfires but miraculously emerged unscathed (or at least still airborne).

Both of JohnBiggles' Do17s fell to the Hurricanes, one by ramming attack!

    Round 6
The final set of bombs impacted just short of target (again no photo!)

Yellow 13 ran out of luck and was finished off by the Spitfires.

And the final Do17 opted to make the turn for home before diving to the deck, which turned out to be a fatal error as Rebel's 303 conducted a second successful ramming attack and the Do17 broke apart and went down.

At this point Guntruck's remaining 109 which has been circling back over the coast towards the fight decided the preferred option would be to escape back across the channel and the game was declared.

    Final Scores:
    RAF: 75 points
    Luftwaffe: 20 points

    Kill Tally:
    Rebel - 2x Do17
    Strangely Brown - 1x Do17
    Red Dragon - 1x Bf109
    Camel crew - 1x Spitfire
    Bombing:
    JohnBiggles - 1x partial hit.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in what was my first Doncaster Con and first time running a game on this scale. Hopefully fun was had by all and apologies if I got any of the details wrong (especially names)- let me know if I need to issue any errata!

The scenario was over a bit quicker than I anticipated, assisted by the 109 collision. I had expected the Do17's to last a bit longer too, but their defensive fire is pretty ineffective (there are big blind spots) and Rebel's ramming attacks were very damaging! If you calculate the points values per the official list, the game is slightly unbalanced in favour of the RAF (but mostly due to the limited ammo rule, which really made no difference when not a single 109 managed to get off all 4 cannon shots). The expectation was that 4 109s vs 3 spits would swing in favour of the 109s and the Do17s would survive long enough for the 109s to come to aid them against the Hurricanes.

That looks to have been an exciting game, excellently written, thanks for the post.

Darned unsporting of the British to resort to ramming tactics though.

I expect it was done by a refugee from a Sails game - set in the Peloponnesian wars - maybe.

I have to correct you there. 303 Squadron was Polish and they were super committed. I was proud to command the squadron in the Polish manner.
Great game Mark and a Very good AAR.

I can reccomend a very good book on the Polish 303 Kosciuszko Squadron john.
It is called "For your Freedom and ours" by Lynne Olson and Stanley Cloud ISBN 0-434-00868-0

Another good book is "The Forgotten Few" The Polish Air Force in World War II
    by Adam Zamoyski.
