After bombing Folkestone, a Gotha is heading back across the English Channel to its base in Belgium. It has got past the home defences, but encounters planes from the RNAS, two Sopwith triplanes.
After flying unimpeded, …
Although being constantly challenged by the triplane, the Gotha is making good progress towards home, and it is able to give as well as get. So it does not deviate from its goal.
The gun is clear, so the Sopwith goes on the attack again, despite smoke pouring out of it.
This game only took a half an hour, so we played again, with two players swapping planes. The result was much the same – a short game and the Gotha safely back to base. I realised after preparing the AAR and looking at the photographs again that it would be unlikely that the RNAS would pursue planes over enemy territory. It is more likely that when the Gotha reached the coast, they would swing away and head for home.
We played this scenario 5 years ago. The only difference in the outcome then was that both triplanes were downed!!!
