Sunday August 8th I had the pleasure of meeting Stumptonian (Pete) as he was on a business trip in the area I grew up. We toured the Battleship Massachusetts (BB59) located in Battleship Cove, Fall River, MA. Sad to see how badly it needs some TLC. Had also a walk through of the submarine USS Lionfish. Also had a walkaround of a PT boat. We then drove to a couple of locations in the city to see a Sherman tank and a Pershing tank. After lunch on the New Bedford pier we visited the Fort Tabor ~ Fort Rodman Military Museum. It honors New Bedford residents that have served. (took a few pics of the WWI airplane models, how could I not?) Fort Rodman was erected during the Civil War to protect the harbor and the war ended before it was finished. Only 2 of the 3 planned tiers were completed. Ironically it was designed by Robert E. Lee. Sadly it is in disrepair and all locked up. Finally we crossed the river to my home town, Fairhaven, There we visited the Revolutionary Fort Phoenix. (sorry, no pics, DOH!) Off of Fairhaven is claimed the first naval victory over the British in the Rev War. A pair of sloops were captured. The British retaliated by taking the fort and burning down New Bedford.
We also found a memorial to New Bedford's WWI ace, Frank Baylies. As a kid I heard of Bayiles Square but never new what it was! We also went to the school Frank attended where there is a plaque outside the front door.
Here are a few photos I took of parts of out tour. Pete, please add any you got that I didn't.
First photo is of the pair of adventurers. I Peter (Teaticket) on the left, re-Pete (Stumptonian) on the right.
