Thread: Some lockdown reading - a fail

Default Some lockdown reading - a fail

I went out to do a quick bit of shopping for essentials (legally allowed if you wear a mask) and noticed this volume on the newsagent’s shelf:

I sat down for a quick flick through it after packing away the shopping (red wine, coffee and a few other things) and it was actually a good read, until I got to this page:

Um, that’s not a Vickers FB5 and I’ve never seen an Eindecker with a hump like that!

Oh dear, someone really doesn't know their planes at that publisher.
You'd think the text mentioning 'flying biplane' would have tipped them off...

You would think! Maybe they don’t know what a biplane is!

I’ve scoured the miniscule print in the front and the back but can find no way of contacting them - why am I not surprised?

It's sad that many books drop the ball on it's photos and captions. I've seen many captions with the wrong photo. Guess that's not part of the editor's job.

I watch TV history channel and some times they show the wrong aircraft they are talking about? It gets frustrating some times.

My Jasta 2 Research Project has highlighted dozens of errors in specialist books, magazines and other reference works - photo captions more often than not!

A bit of proof-reading would have picked up most of them, I suspect.

There doesn't seem to much of that happening these days. I suppose writers and editors are relying on spell checks and grammar hints rather than reading the text thoroughly.

I always get annoyed when I read those books or watch the history channel or some YouTube offerings because there seems to be so many errors these days. (Cruisers referred to as Battleships is one personal bugbear). My concern is that some of these inaccuracies are used as reference sources and become "fact". I think factoids is the term. I feel that the history of those who fought in the wars to safeguard our freedom deserves much more respect.
