  1. #1

    Default OTT BYM Mission 2 “All for One and One for All” 12th October 1916 {Stumptonian}

Oberleutnant Bernhard Wienand had hastily called three of his pilots for a quick mission briefing.

    .“

< The Entente has sent a large force of bombers to attack the Mauser arms factory in Oberndorf am Neckar. Initial reports suggest that things did not go as planned and they suffered heavy losses. Apparently, many of the attacking troops mistakenly hit Donauesschingen. High Command wants us to intercept stragglers and leftover escorts. >

An hour and a half later, those three pilots are returning from a futile search for the enemy bombers. As they near No Man’s Land they do see several scouts approaching.

Ltn Günther Giesebrecht in his now-regular yellow Albatros D.II is leading Ltn Felix Eisenhardt and Ltn Dietrich Oelker, also flying D.IIs with slightly different camouflaged livery.
As they near No Man’s Land they do see several scouts approaching.
It is hard to tell for certain what the enemy flight – if it is a flight - consists of.

As they get closer, Giesebrecht sees a grey machine with British roundels, but does not recognize the type.
It’s one of the new SPAD S.VII that have been rarely seen as yet.
This one is piloted by 2Lt Richard Glen who had been given the opportunity to evaluate the new machine for The Bulldogs.

Oelker also spies an aircraft he is not familiar with.
This one is a Sopwith Pup.
It is flown by 2Lt James Shaw, a new replacement for the Bulldogs, who is in fact on his way to the squadron to deliver the ‘Pup’ on a trial offered by one of the RNAS units.
He has just stumbled into the area after noticing several aircraft heading roughly in the same direction.

    -------------------------------------------------

That was a nice mission, Mike. Just took a long time, as these sometimes do ...
Luckily it all came crashing down (literally) in Turn 14!
I had been thinking of calling a draw and sending everyone home. There were 7 or 8 photos I didn’t post because there were getting to be too many ‘non-events’.

It was good to get some new planes to the table. Although I did use my SPADs back in 2015 when I first joined OTT, the Sopwith Pup made it’s first flight!
I had a heckuva time remembering how the formulas worked when converting Dave’s D8 charts to Excel so I could add the D* deck, but I finally got it sorted out.
Guess I had better add the Fr and R(a) charts while I remember …

Speaking of the Pup, I can’t take credit for it. It’s one of a pair I bought as part of a former forum member’s collection back in 2018.

It was an Adler victory, but I am sure Baz (‘Gully_Raker’) would have been one of the first to congratulate me. With the time difference his was nearly always the first comment.
I will certainly miss his camaraderie and positive attitude. If I ever get myself a Gunbus I will get it painted up just like his.
I am glad I got his last mission played and posted when he was able to see it.

    So here’s to Barry.
He always posted a ton of drinks, so I will do the same.

Good job, Pete. Nice to see some new planes in the mix - and giving your Adlers a decent run for their money, but not too decent, eh?

Too true about Baz. So strange not seeing his comment there as the first...hard to believe really. Still stunned by the news.

Pete I'd just finished reading your game report and got to the end and the bit about Barry. I had to check to see if I'd missunderstood your comment but unfortunately not.
That's such sad news, very upsetting.

It sounds like you had quite a frustrating game with the low scores and David's jams, pleased it came to a conclusion for you.
    Cheers

Congratulations Pete. Another splendidly fought mission. I share your thoughts about Barry - the news blew me away when I heard it and, yes, he will be greatly missed. Glad you enjoyed the mission and it was, as Paul says, good to see the SPAD VII and the Sopwith Pup, both in action.
REP inbound and here's sharing a toast to those flying higher.

    Hi Pete

Great AAR and game and win for the Eagles. The time and gun jams were the same with mine.

I am sure the other Baz would have been the first to congratulate you. :cuppa:

Nicely done Pete, your chaps got the job done eventually but looks like you had to work for it, those final bursts sealed the fate of the Bulldogs though !

    Onkel says:

Well done all, the skies cleared of Englander's, a brace of kills & a new ace to celebrate

Ltn Felix Eisenhardt is awarded the Iron Cross 1st class for his fifth victory for the Kaiser
He is confirmed ace with Sniper skill.

Across the lines Uncle receives the bad news that not all the lads will be bringing their kites home and it might be a while before they're fit for duty again but at least they're still alive if not exactly kicking. The enforced rest may do the some good he mused.

Lots of photos - very good.

I keep worrying about putting too many photos in the AARs.

Tough fight but you hung in there and pulled it off in the end. Nice to see your new Pup in action. An Alder win is always good news to read about!
