    Book Title:
    The WWI French Aces Encyclopedia
    Author:
    David Mechin
    ISBN:
    ‎ 978-1953201300
    Category:
    Reference
    Format:
    Paperback
    Summary:
    =====
    French fighter pilots inflicted more than half the losses suffered by the German air service in the Great War, and the French aces accounted for nearly half of those. Based on extensive research, noted French aviation historian David Méchin has documented the personal stories of these aces in the WWI French Aces Encyclopedia with accurate text, photos, detailed victory tables, and color profiles. Those stories are told in depth for the first time in English in this landmark set of books. Volume 1 tells the stories of 26 aces from Albert Achard to Benjamin Bozon-Yerduraz with 231 photos, 12 in color, and 31 color profiles in its 224 pages.
    =====

    This review is of Volume 1 Achard to Boyau in what looks to be another excellent and extensive Aeronaut series (many more volumes to come, volume 2 is also available at time of this review).

    In short, this series looks to be amazing. Several pages are dedicated to each ace, with unique biographical information, quite a number of excellent photos, victory lists, and often summaries of encounters. Numerous profiles of diverse aircraft types are provided (somewhat mediocre image quality given the type of paper but more than adequate for Wings painters). Looking forward to the remaining volumes in this series!

    Ooooh, a French version of "The Blue Max Airmen" series!

    Definitely one to get if it matches up to that series.

    Thanks for flagging it up!

    Great spot Chris. Mon dieu! Another chunk of hard-earned going on books

    Volume 2 came out earlier this month, covering Bozon-Verduraz to Costes. There is noticeable 'price-creep' going on - £39, up from £35 for Volume 1.

    Vol 2 has 248 pages, and vol 1 has 224 pages -- there could be some variation in production costs I suppose. Blue Max Airmen has similar varied prices so I'm hoping it's that and not a portent of things to come

    Thanks for the heads up Chris, although I don't think three volumes for £120. 00 odd - from A to F - is quite within my price range. Tempting but no - be strong Mike

    Definitely pricey. After they are in circulation a while the aeronaut books are often available via amazon used -- almost all that I've received that way have been in excellent condition.
