Thread: Full-Color 3D Prints (RAF)

  1. #1

    Default Full-Color 3D Prints (RAF)

I'll keep this top post up to date with new full-color 3D prints as they're made available, rather than making a new post with each plane and color scheme. Right now they're printed at Shapeways and fulfilled via Etsy.

    The URL is: https://www.etsy.com/shop/ReducedAircraft

If you want notification each time a new paint scheme is made available, subscribe to the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ReducedAircraft. If you want to see every new post there (rather than just a few), go to the group, click the "Joined" button > Manage Notifications > All Posts.

And yes, they're currently fairly expensive. Hopefully someday Shapeways will offer this material directly, which will help with the pricing (since Etsy won't be taking their substantial cut). That will also help with shipping, since a single order can be more easily packaged together. And -- wishful thinking -- someday the base price of the color material will come down. A lot of the price is tied to that, since the material is fairly expensive, and on top Shapeways adds a 6% processing charge and Etsy adds a 5% transaction fee and 3% payment processing fee and they both adds a N% sales tax and/or VAT (since they can't figure out how to tell each other "I'll cover the taxes").

Newly added full-color models: Airco D.H.2s. See the first post for images.

(I'll only add to this thread for new models rather than for every paint scheme, since the former come much less often.)

I added an Albatros D.III and SPAD 13. There will probably be more color schemes for those added in coming weeks.

There are some good photos of the actual prints in this thread and on the Etsy site.

I took up the challenge of doing Hans Böhning's Albatros D.Va, and -- while difficult -- I have to say it was a lot of fun trying to get it right. It is a paint scheme that would be very difficult to paint and decal by hand. I'll post a photo of the actual model once one arrives.

For color choices I used nose and lozenge-wrapping that Wingnut Wings recommended, but the wheel covers and Bavarian blue closer to the Jasta Colors book.

Yes, those Bavarian planes are beautiful and would be a challenge to paint and decal!

Always marvelled at how we do not really care what our SWMBO's buy for themselves if it makes them happy, but if we buy one thing for ourselves .......... "EE's been at it again!"

It does seem to be an old stereotype.
My late wife and I never had any serious disagreements on hobby buying, though we did have good discussions on household budgets.

Any chance these will be available on Shapeways? $110 is a bit pricey for one aircraft (etsy charges like a wounded rhino for postage to Australia)

I've been asking them to make the full-colored plastic directly available in the Shapeways shops, to avoid Etsy charges and double-taxation and other headaches, but no joy thus far.

I wonder if SW customers sending in their complaints about double dipping would help?

It can't hurt! Just write to support@shapeways.com, especially if you've bought a full-color print.

Side note: I added pilot and unit labels to the pictures in the first post.

Between the new Albatros models and the Fokker D.VII models, I am not sure which awesome one to get next!
I have the same problem when trying to decide which paint scheme to tackle next! So many colorful ones to choose from. (The Wingnut Wings documents and Jasta Colors I are excellent sources.)

You probably noticed the two new D.IIIs which were done in collaboration with Mike "OldGuy59". And I did the Meierdirks D.V because I remember painting that exact plane about 40 years ago, in 1:285 scale.

On a side note: Etsy keeps urging me to add a video to my listings. Now ordinarily I would think that was more suitable for some crafty thing with moving parts. But I thought...why not try to take advantage of their video hosting?

So -- after several hours of computer rendering time -- I added one to the Fokker D.VII listing. Here is the URL of just the video. Hopefully this link doesn't change too often.

    Cool video, Daryl
Shipping notice received on my 2 Bavarian D.VIIs today! I've emailed shapeways about getting off their duff regarding color plastic.

    Oh Gawd Strewth!

So many new additions - you're really trying to bankrupt me, aren't you, Daryl?

    That's at least 5 I want now, maybe 6.............

I've just been to the Etsy shop, and only 7 of these 29 planes are listed for sale.

Is there a way to get the other ones "added" so that I can buy them?

    DUMBASS!

7 different TYPES on plane are listed, with the optional colour schemes listed within each aircraft type.

I really shouldn't "shop" while still at work...

I received the two Jasta 5 color prints. The fuselage is gorgeous. The checker pattern and striping came out wonderful. For some reason I thought the wings would be a bit more darker, but maybe not. I may have had an unrealistic expectation there. Overall, extremely nice. I have a side view of each model. I then took a top and bottom view of the two models with the Albatros from the recently re-released dual packs.
