Thread: Full-Color 3D Prints (RAF)

Batch of FCN12 material planes just arrived from shapeways. I am realy pleased. Few of them had some colouring problems. It is weird that their quality check let them go, but maybe it is in a tollerance. I will post some photos for you to see.

And one advantage of FCN12 - no droping wings

Here are some photos of missing colour on some the planes. For some reasons printer does not inject ink to some places where it should.

    Is this a one-off occurrence?

Some of the spots could be weathering or wear? Other spots, not so much.

I had to touch up Ares Ju-88s because the decals didn't cover the models completely. Doing a few spots on a Shapeways plane isn't a big stretch. However, it goes back to my arguement that the models are no longer 'Out-of-the-Box'. They need some amount of painting. Still much easier to do touch-ups, than painting and decaling a whole model.

You should definitely contact support@shapeways.com about those, and send the pictures! I didn't see such defects on any of my recent FCN12 purchases. Shapeways subcontracts some of their printing to smaller firms, and I wonder if one of their partners needs more practice in printer maintenance?

    Petr,

Definitely contact shapeways about those, include your order #, your pictures and pics of the tags on the plastic bags. They should send you replacements.

Thank you for sugestions guys, I already did contact Shapeways and send them the pictures. I will report whan they answer.

First, I ordered one plane to see how it is. It is perfect, with no flaws like the ones on Daryls photos.

So I ordered 25 models and 5 of them, the worst, are those i have presented here. There is seven or eight more with just realy minor defects, rest is fine. It is wierd. Ig gives the impressin somothing must have been wrong with the printer (or technician) that day and I was unlucky to be part of that print batch.

OldGuy29, I think that this coloured planes from shapeways should be "out of the box". You pay for to be so in my opinion, shapeways states that they control for bad prints and reprint them imediately. Ares models have flaws because they are assembled/decaled by humans, so you can not expect perfect result, but when you are lucky to live close to some shop that sells them, you can at least pick the best one. Shapeways models are printed by the machine, so perfect results, within the limits of the technology, are expected.

I am modeler, so I can repair the paint with no problem, and I even consider to do it first. I was just happy to have the planes in my colection. But then I decided, that I do not want to because I paid for them and I think they are bad prints. Just for the principle. If you buy new faulty electronic, for example, you do not repair it and keep it, when you are able to, but you return it. I am realy couriouse waht will shapeways say.

I am not a modeller and ordered a couple of Brandenbergs back on 4th September. They officially placed the order on the 14th and I am still awaiting delivery. That is the biggest downside for overseas buyers, but if mine come looking like that it will be the only order I ever place.

  8. #358

    Default

As you speak about delivery time - I was also quite surprised, that this last order was very quickly done. In a week or so I had 25 planes at home. Last time I ordered just three planes and I waited three weeks for them. If they rush it, it can explain the bad quality of their work.

  9. #359

    Default

It seems Serbia is easy for UPS to deliver to. I ordered some mats from Deepcut Studios in Europe before and have always got them within 3 weeks. With the USA ..... not so good.

I know from tracking my order that it arrived in the USPS depot in Australia on the 24th of September but it seems they cannot find Adelaide from there. I have had much better results from FEDEX in the past but I guess we have to put up with the carrier that Shapeways choose.

  10. #360

Shapeways created internal complaint about my prints (15 bad prints out of 25), and requested a reprint for these models (at subcontractor I suppose). We will se what subcontractos has to say about it .

Today I received my RAF FCN12 model of the Morris & Rees FE2b. Doesn't have any missing paint like Petr above. Also no drooping wings and the propeller is straight as well. Overall a nice looking model. Pics follow. I will try some sealant as I recently picked up a bottle of satin varnish.

Here's some pics. It looks like a matte clearcoat had little noticeable effect, but a gloss clearcoat was a bit of an improvement.
The Fee had some smudges where color wasn't applied around the upper roundels, so I've notified support.

Nice pics. i am guessing you are well pleased with your haul. I was thinking of getting a couple of black Fe2B's for 100 squadron after getting my Brandenberg D1's. They arrived safe and sound too. It takes so long to get to Australia though. You would think that coming downhill to down under it would be quicker.

Pete - Here is my FCN FE2b after I brushed on the Windsor & Newton Satin Varnish. I left part of the right top wings unvarnished for comparison as well as the right horizontal stabilizer. I think the varnish is a nice improvement over the original surfaces.

My biggest challenge there is that I haven't done most of them in standard plastic yet! (Other folks had them pretty well covered.) But I'll keep the request in mind. At least there are some good color scheme guides for them.

Also, in pricing of black/grey material, there's a nonlinear point in Shapeways pricing where once it reaches a certain size and suddenly the price in that material is no longer competitive. I haven't figured out exactly what that size is, but it's somewhere between the average two-seater and the larger multi-engine bombers. For instance, I have an A.E.G. G.IV in gray PA12 material at $19.77, but step up to the larger A.E.G. G.V and it's suddenly $55.77 (though available in cheaper material too). I suspect the same non-linear pricing will exist for colored FCN12, but I haven't tested that theory yet.

Since there wasn't a lot of individual or unit differentiation of these planes, I decided (for the first time) just to publish them in factory colors only, rather than by individual pilots' paint schemes. (Okay, I did bi-colored wheel covers on the E.IV, as was shown for Pfalz E.IV 647/15, just for variety.)

I got my first order using the NatFCPA12 material.
All the Pups, Pfalz D.XIIs and almost all the Fokker D.VIIs came through great.
Colors are a bit soft, but honestly, if the planes are in the sun a few weeks, they would probably look that way.
One D.XII has a run of magenta on the bottom of the fuselage.
However, John Jeffers SPAD 13 (the really gaudy one post-war) is a hot mess.
I'll be reporting them w/ pics.

The Brandenburg C.I was (by far) Austria-Hungary's most common plane of the war, serving from 1916 through the end of the war, with engine upgrades provided in newer series (from the 160hp Daimler to the 230hp Hiero and 250hp Benz). The parent company built only 6% of the deliveries; the rest were from Phönix and UFAG.

Right now I'm working on Bristol Fighters, and I have the Salmson 2 queued up next (it was widely used by both France and the USA in 1918.) But I can look at some more Pups after that. And I've got some new color references on Jasta Boelcke and on JG1 with nice paint schemes.

How much did the Belgians use the Pup? I still need to find an inexpensive copy of The Belgian Air Service in the First World War.

Only one color profile for a Pup in that book. However, there are six Sopwith Camels, six Sopwith 1-1/2 Stutters, and seven SPAD XIs. There are also a number of Breguet 14s.

I don't know where you'll find an inexpensive copy. That and the French airplane book are probably the most expensive books I have ever purchased.
So how many books are in your personal library?

    Salmson 2! That is awesome!

The Pup was used as an escort in the observation and bombing squadrons. They were parceled out in small batches to those squadrons. I have seen at least two Belgian Pup schemes.
