Default WW II Ships I have Visited

For no particular reason this 4th of July, I began thinking about the WW II ships I have visited and compiled the following list of ships I have been aboard:

    1) HMS Belfast (C-35)
    2) USS Franklin (CV-13)
    3) USS New Jersey (BB-62)
    4) USS Massachusetts (BB-59)
    5) USS Ling (SS-297)
    6) USS Requin (SS-481)
    7) USS Kidd (DD-661)
    8) USS Slater (DE-766)
    9) USS Kankakee (AO-39) -- this was the ship my Dad came home from Japan on post WW II. He and I visited it while it was still on active service when it came into the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1960's -- it was the sister ship of the one he served on for the duration of WW II (USS Merrimack, AO-37).
    10) USS Intrepid (CV- 11 )
    11) USS Joseph P. Kennedy (DD-850)
    12) USS Cassin Young (DD-793)
    13) Elco PT-617
    14) Higgins PT-796
    15) USS Lionfish (SS-298)
    16) Liberty ship ghost fleet (dozens of ships in mothballs when I was a kid anchored in upper Hudson River-- couldn't go on them but was very close to them)

There are probably more -- but I've reached that age where things disappear into the mists of memory......

I've been on a few but only a fraction of your list Bill. Missouri, North Carolina, and those in Battleship Cove along with the Massachusetts.

I have led a sheltered life as far as WWII ships go. Just these five but I would love to see the USS Texas one day when we can actually travel again.

    HMAS Diamentina
    HMAS Whyalla
    USS Bowfin
    USS Missouri
    SS Jeremiah O'Brien

I found this picture of the "Ghost Fleet" on the Hudson River (at one time over 200 ships)....technically called the National Reserve Fleet - Hudson River. A memory from my youth!Click image for larger version.

That is an impressive list, Bill. We do not have many preserved WW2 ships over here in the United Kingdom.

    HMS Caroline (WW1)
    USS Intrepid
    USS Wisconsin

    Nope.

Lived in London nearly 33 years, and still haven't got around to it!

My visits started when I was a child -- since that time the Franklin, the Kankakee, the Merrimack and all the Liberty ships have been sold off for scrap. Sadly only a few remain preserved now.

Oh Tim I recommend a visit to HMS Belfast ! It may be the best presented preservation of a WW II warship I've ever seen (although the Intrepid in NYC is right up there too). I spent the better part of an afternoon clambering every square inch of the ship (I don't know if in these days the authorities will let visitors have that much freedom to roam). I even climbed a ladder on the forward mast up to what appeared to be a forward gun observer station at the mast head. It was locked so I couldn't go in but could see the inside very well (and you could really get a nice view of London from up there). If you get the time I think you will really enjoy the visit.
