    Default WGSF: CIEL DE GUERRE

    Book Title:
    CIEL DE GUERRE
    Author:
    Philippe Pinard - Olivier Dauger
    ISBN:
    978-2-88890-707-7
    Category:
    Fiction
    Format:
    Hardback
    Summary:
    Presentation
The Battle of France, the debacle, Free France and the regular air force, from the German invasion of Alsace to North Africa, the war within the famous French fighter squadron "Les Diables Rouges", from the beginning of the conflict to the end of 1942. A great saga in 4 parts, which traces the history of French aviation during the Second World War.
Four comics albums (which are also gathered in a single album) :
    1. Les Diables rouges : the first days of the German offensive in may 1940 in France.
    2. Cocardes en flammes : defeat of France in June 1940, the escape of some french squadrons to North Africa and the attack of french vessels by the English fleet in Mers el Kebir.
    3. Alerte en Syrie : a difficult choice for french pilots : joining the Vichy government forces or the free french forces.
4 Opération Torch : in November 1942, the Vichy French squadrons are engaged against the allied embarked planes and support the fight until the cease-fire.

    Personal opinion
I find this story is great for a little-known episode; the Franco-British antagonism in North Africa and Syria against the background of Vichy France versus Gaullist France. Extremely well documented, the characters are far from caricatures in terms of their political motivations.
A little negative remark about the face of secondary characters who sometimes look the same.
But, this is a well written, well drawn, reliable and credible story, with great aerial scenes.

Beautiful pictures and nice stories there is even the Bloch 174 with Antoine de St Exupery but the end of the story on the last volume is a bit missed to my liking !

Cheers Simon - All four titles are also available from Amazon, as Kindle versions - less expensive that way so long as you don't mind not having an actual book in your hand when you read
