Windy is departing for the West for a few weeks so we decided to get a game in before he left. For a scenario we picked a strafing mission with five sections of trench being his target. No doubt the German High Command wanted to soften them up for yet another big push. Windy Von Jack was flying the A firing Albatros D.II, the base of his plane was made by Biggles Downunder (Wayne) and donated to me for this mission. The rules for Infantry Fire from the Rules and Accessories pack were applied. Any plane within one ruler distance of the red dot on a trench section would take one A damage card with the rifle fire causing special damages only and the damage points not counted. For the sake of balance (and also to avoid running out of A cards), we decided that only one trench section would fire when the plane was in range. The British commanders did not take kindly to having their soldiers strafed so summoned some help in the form of a B firing DH2 flown by Baxter. The Riflemen used the white Aerodrome rulers, the Albatros used the standard brown WoG rulers, and the defending DH2 used the wooden ones. The Albatros had a damage value of 14 points, the DH2 had 13, and each Trench section had 5 damage points of value.
Now .... start your engines and good luck.
In his first pass Von Jack takes out one trench section!
Baxter joins the fight and the Albatros is repeatedly hit by both aircraft and ground fire.
Despite being under continuous fire from the ground and also getting a lot of attention from the DH2, the Albatros kills one section after another until he finishes the last section off.
With only 2 damage points left the Albatros heads for home and the DH2 returns to base licking his wounds. The DH2 had engine damage and was down to his last damage point too!
The Albatros caught an enormous number of A cards from the trenches but only one or two had any effect at all. He managed to give 12 damage points to the DH2 and 25 damage points to the ground targets. Well done to Windy Von Jack a true credit to the German Empire.
Overall the game was very well balanced and entertaining. A scenario well worth trying again later I think.
