I think that any bloke that's painted a Voss Dr.1 has it in mind to playing out a version of his final epic fight using WoG and so it was for me.
Not having 56 Squadron to hand I cobbled together a largish formation of SE5a's and went at it a bit half assed as I wanted to see how it might go using my altitude rules and without using any ace skills on either side, though I did bear in mind Voss was a stuntman.
So, here's Werner, he's had a couple of scraps and looking for more.
And this bloke, McCudden, is looking to accommodate him
But he's brought friends to the party
McCudden - sends his two wingmen into action and they dive down as they close on the Dr.1
The rest of the pack watch on in anticipation
Wily Werner has seen them coming though and whips his machine round to face them - the first exchanges cause no damage to either party.
As they whip past each other Werner exchanges fire with the second SE and comes off second best with this exchange.
Werner launched himself skyward to avoid a close encounter but runs smack into a battering close range burst from the top cover, though his shots find the mark also and leave the SEa(H) trailing smoke and flame.
Werner whips round in a climbing turn behind his flaming target
His opening burst does no further damage
Though he has slightly better luck with his second
Diving after a target that was glimpsed below but has now wisely turned away, Werner again strays into the arc of the first SE that has meanwhile circled round the mulberry bush. Rounds clatter through the DR.1, it can't take much more damage now.
The SE closes behind him to administer the coup de gras but no significant damage comes of the next burst
Meanwhile the other SE's mill about with bad intentions on their mind
Glimpsing a red Albatros over his shoulder Werner hauls back on the stick and his machine leaps skyward once more, evading the SE as it stalls for the final kill shot.
Werner pulls his machine through a loop and drops in right behind his tormentor, lancing him with a close range burst...
Unfortunately he has ideally placed himself between the fires of two of his other protagonists and the pilot of the flaming SE has his revenge.
As Werner falls away earthward the red Albatros scores a sneaky hit on McCudden's SE before wisely running away
Those that were hit:
Werner:
The Tommy's
All in all it went quite well. I flew Werner, all other machines were AI driven using my D8 charts.
I decided that McCudden would direct traffic initially then take his chance to strike as and when it offered itself. As it turned out my antics put Werner in harms way as much as the SE's actions so not much direction was required. The result was as expected, of course, but Werner put up a good fight, though less zero's for my efforts would have been nice it somewhat reflected the historic outcome.
If I have another go I'll bring in the ace skills and set some scenario rules to help thin the herd a bit - I'll also get the red Albatros in play earlier, it was a turn later than planned this time.

McCudden: Daredevil; Intuitive; Good at Escaping
I'll have to figure out some skills for the other SE pilots of course, these two have plenty to pick from !
