Default OTT CYM Mission 12--And the Beat Goes On--27th September '16--gully_raker

Uncle called all the 2 seaters crews of C Flight together. "Right Chaps I want a crew to volunteer to undertake an artillery spotting mission using a new flying pattern some wallah at HQ has dreamed up. There are two heavy German Batteries causing havoc to our lads in the trenches & this is an ideal time to try this new approach".
Young 2nd Lt. Patrick Thyme, known in the flight as "Part time" due to his initials from Patrick Arthur Roland Thyme, immediately called out "Sir! I would like to take on that mission with my regular observer AM2 Alf Apsland" "Excellent" said Uncle. "You will fly the CDL Strutter which has just had a full overhaul & I will detail Sgt Al Foyle to act as your escort in De Havilland C 3." Now here is the chart for the mission".

Ahead in the distance they could see 2 Hun Halbertstadt scouts headed their way. Earlier from the Eagles Nest Ltn Otto Schoenfielder in his grey D.II & Ltn Kurt Rudiger in a cream D.II had taken off for a morning patrol & seeing the enemy machines headed towards them.

Sgt Foyle headed for the grey D.II & they exchanged shots but both guns immediately jammed. "Bugger" muttered Foyle banging on the breach of his Lewis.

Rudiger had a clear shot at the Strutter as it headed towards its turning point & missed but Apsland found he was out of arc to try to return fire.

As he was preparing to radio in to the Artillery Apsland had to concentrate on the Halberstadt who continued to chase them. They exchanged close range shots & Alf's aim was perfect wounding the German Pilot. Al Foyle also tried a deflection shot at the D.II but missed.

    Thoughts & Observations

Well that was a fun mission to fly! Bit of a struggle to try to keep to the pattern but did my best.
I think I was very lucky with the damage draws as the Germans copped the worst however the cards always turn eventually.
I flew the Strutter & all other aircraft were AI. The 3rd German scout came on too late to really make an impact.
Used Dave's D8 charts as usual & altitude was not required.
Thanks Mike for a most enjoyable mission.
And many Thanks to Dave (flash) for all the hard Admin work & corrections to my Butchers Bills!

    VICTORY POINTS

    British:
    2 targets destroyed = 20 points
    1 scout shot down = 5 points
    1 scout FTRB = 5 points

    TOTAL 30 points

    German
    No Points

    BRITISH VICTORY

Well that was a splendid end to your CYM Campaign, Baz.

The luck was certainly with your boys and they used it well.

    RIP Ltn Karl Rüdiger
I wonder is he was a cousin to my Karsten Rüdiger who suffered a similar fate early in the Daring Young Men campaign?

REP on the way packed with a single malt.

Thanks for the kind words Pete.
Wouldn't be surprised as I dont think Rudiger is a popular name in Germany.
    R.I.P. All the Rudigers!

Oh well played Baz, the cards fell for your chaps that time out

    Uncle says:

Well done chaps, everyone home in one piece, Huns sent packing and their new arty positions properly malleted. Something to celebrate methinks
Well done on the Tally Baz, much improved, keep it up.

Congratulations Baz. A great ending to your campaign and a fine victory for the Bulldogs. I must say I was relieved to see no Albatros DIs or IIs turning up RIP Ltn Kurt Rudiger Well played and glad you enjoyed it

The required flight pattern is pretty nigh impossible using known manoeuver cards in any deck, so yes, all you can do is match it as closely as possible. I thought of providing special cards, but that was a non starter. Myself I flew a very zig zag figure of eight and pre prepared a flight pattern that I had available for any who wanted it, but nobody did

I'll have to spray the rep around a bit more before returning, but this is certainly worthy as a final AAR in the DYM campaign. - I'll be back.
PS Like the look of your new table - quite the correct use of a garage; I know of nobody who keeps a car in theirs
(Assuming I interpreted the photo correctly of course )

Well that's a right proper way to end a campaign, Barry. Three cheers for your Bulldogs followed far too many drinks in the mess.

I wonder how long you'll keep flying your trusty DH2s in the next campaign.

Well deserved rep - is in the post due to 'jamming' at my end - and, unlike Peter, not at your end.

Thanks Paul! It was great to finish on a good win.
I think the time has come to retire my venerable DH-2's but I must say they have served me very well & I love flying them
However with those Albatros D.II's waiting in the background I think it will be time to add some Spad VII's to my N 17's for C Flights BYM shows.

Nice one Barry, sorry to be so late catching up. That's a very nice Strutter is it an Ares repaint ir a Shapeways? If the latter you've made a jolly good job of disguising the normal rough surface.

You mention retiring your DH2's but I'm finding the Nieuports far too fragile for my liking and prefer the DH2 although my favourite is still the FEE's.

    Cheers

Just read a snippet mentioning DH.2's taking on the bally Hun in Feb '17 so you could hang on to them if you wanted, though they will be outpaced compared to the SPADs.

Hi John. No it is a Shapeways. I used a tile sealer to smooth the surface. The colour scheme is based on a RNAS Strutter.
Like you I do love my DH-2's & prefer them to the N 17 for game purposes so they will probably make some appearances in BYM.
Flash is correct in that the DH-2 soldered on into 1917.

Thanks Barry, she looks very nice.

I'm looking forward to flying some new planes in the coming 12 months but I'll be sorry to retire my Elll's and the Be2c's have only flown a couple of times although their crews were lucky to survive the experience.
