Thread: RESCUE IN THE PACIFIC 1944

Default RESCUE IN THE PACIFIC 1944

An exclusive scenario imagined by Absurdbanipal :
On the blue waves of the Pacific, a lifeboat drifts with an unidentified pilot, each side having lost several aircraft in the previous days in this area.
Two rescue missions arrive on the scene together : the Japanese camp (Absurdbanipal) is composed of a single-engine Nakajima A6M2 Rufe seaplane (identical armament to the Zero, without a rear machine gun) and a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zeke, while the American camp (Monse) is composed of a Consolidated Catalina seaplane escorted by a Grumman F4F Wildcat fighter.

To recover the wrecked pilot, a seaplane must land as close as possible to the canoe (landing sequence from altitude 1 in three maneuver cards : Descent - Straight - Stall), then wait 3 turns before putting a canoe overboard (materialized by a counter) and move this counter forward each turn by a distance corresponding to the diameter of this counter. The first rescuer to reach the castaway's boat wins the game.
The two camps start face to face at altitude 4 on the first mat, the lifeboat is placed in the center of the second mat.

The two seaplanes are beautifully painted Armament In Miniatures by Absurdbanipal, as are the two sea mats.

1- The Catalina heads towards the canoe and descends to altitude 3 at the same time as the Zero.
The Ruffe (3 damage points) and the Wildcat (0) exchange the first shots.

2-3- Three turns later, the Catalina descends to altitude 1 (removal of the 2nd peg) and then performs a Straight in the next maneuver.
All the protagonists are out of range of each other.

4- Thinking of completing the landing sequence, the Catalina performs a Stall but its pilot also realizes that the plane is not landed since the landing must begin with a Descent from altitude 1.
The Wildcat fires at the Rufe (5 points + Smoke damage) at long range with a bonus shot from the higher altitude (additional A damage token).

5- An inconsequential exchange of fire between the Zero and the Catalina's rear gunner, who has begun a series of turns to return to the boat.
Descending to altitude 1, the Rufe performs the ditching sequence and is out of range of the Wildcat, which remained at altitude 3 for several maneuvers.

6- The Catalina's rear gunner shoots at the Zero (2 points including 1 for the consecutive shot) which has no target in its firing arc.
Exchange of fire between the front gunner of the Catalina (2 points) and the Rufe (1 point) which has finished landing.

7- New consecutive shot from the Catalina's rear gunner on the Zero (2 points + Flame damage).

8- Split-S from the Wildcat which is at altitude 1 and fires at the Rufe (0 point).
The Rufe is in the blind spot of the Catalina's rear gunner.
From Altitude 1, the Catalina begins the landing sequence with a Descent.
Remove a Flame counter for the Zero (1 point).

9- The pilot of the Rufe has launched a boat and is heading for the shipwrecked man's boat.
Second maneuver of the Catalina's landing sequence.
Remove a Flame counter for the Zero (2 points).

10- The Catalina completes the ditching with a Stall.
Remove a Flame counter for the Zero (0 points).
The pilot of the Rufe in his boat approaches the wrecked ship.

    11- Wildcat Split-S.
Remove a Flame counter for the Zero (3 points).

12- Wildcat shot on the Rufe which is destroyed (10 points) while its pilot on the boat reaches the wrecked ship.
The Zero shoots at the Catalina (5 points) which does not have enough range to shoot back.
Removal of the last Flame counter for the Zero (0 point).

13- Exchange of fire between the Zero (1 point + damage to the left wing) and the rear gunner of the Catalina (10 points, forgot to take a Damage A token for the consecutive shot).
The pilot of the Rufe joins the wrecked man in his boat.

14- A crew member of the Catalina climbs into a lifeboat to get the 2 shipwrecked.
New exchange of fire between the Zero (3 points including 1 for the consecutive shot + Engine and right rudder damage) and the rear gunner of the Catalina (12 points + Engine damage). Both planes are destroyed.

15- The Wildcat flies over the boat which now contains 3 shipwrecked men.

    Final :
Japanese: 2 planes lost, 1 pilot surviving.
Americans: 1 plane and its pilot operational, 1 plane lost, 1 crew member surviving.
A new rescue mission must be programmed.

A very clever scenario, simple and elegant, did you use the normal landing rules or amend them because you were landing on water?

All the planes look great and we still don't know if it was a Japanese or American pilot in the dinghy, a good reason for a re-match.

is there a competition for silly questions? Is so please enter me in it.

In my defence I read the opening last night but couldn't finish it and so read the rest this morning, promptly forgetting the clearly explained outline on landing and dinghy movement rates. I blame either age or red wine and calvados, probably in equal measure.

Simon very kindly didn't expose my question to public ridicule for which I thank him.

Its all been said - very enjoyable read; interesting scenario; great aircraft (like AIM I do); Hope the guys that ended up in the raft had plenty of drinking water and a pack of playing cards. Seems they might be there for some while. Thanks for sharing. REP gun jammed I'm sorry to say. Guess you've been busy recently
