Thread: Rear Seat Gunners at Midwa

Default Rear Seat Gunners at Midwa

An article from U.S. Naval Institute.

These men were truly heroes. Yet, when you say this of them, they will insist they were just doing their jobs. To them, the heroes were the ones who didn’t come back.

    From the article:
“He recalled a grim briefing with the pilots of VT-3 in their Yorktown ready room. They were bluntly informed that most of the squadron was to be sacrificed. If three planes managed to get through the Japanese fighter screen, they would be doing their jobs. “I was in shock,” Childers recalled. “As we walked out, everyone was joking and laughing. I was not laughing.””

Great reading, the lack of training for them is still astounding.

That was my thought as well. In some cases they were literally just putting warm bodies in the rear seat.

War is hell, after all, and you do what you need to.
Thankfully, the USA had the resources, and the distance from the front lines, to train their aircrews ell, most of the time.
