    Default OTTCYM Mission 11 - Attack Plane Surprise - 19 September 1916 {Stumptonian}

    19 September 1916

Two Roland C.II are concentrating on finishing their strafing runs over the British trenches and have not noticed a trio of Nieuport N.17s approaching from their 5 o’clock.

The lead Roland is flown by Fwbl Lukas Himmel-Spaziergänger with Observer/Gunner Ltn Roland-Reinhart Dietrich-Daimler.
Following close behind in the camouflaged C.II are pilot Ltn Justus Raucheisen with his usual partner, Ltn Max Jungbauer.

The Albatros D.IIs have arrived on the scene.
The yellow machine is flown by Adler ace Ltn Günther Giesebrecht, whose 13 confirmed kills lead the Jasta.
His wingman in the camouflaged livery preferred by the famous Oswald Boelcke, is the Jasta’s ace holding the second-highest tally, with 11 victories, Ltn Till Huebner.

The Germans have not yet noticed the Nieuport.
They are all at roughly the same altitude.*

The deeper sound of the Nieuport’s Lewis drowns out the chatter of the Spandaus.

Round one goes to the Adler as Gordon’s *Le Rhône 9Ja is obviously damaged and the N.17 loses power, making a dreadful racket.
Gordon curses quietly, realizing he can not take on two Albatros and will be forced to retire from the field.

    ========================

    An interesting mission, Dan.
I expected the initial Nieuport attack to do better than they did.
Probably should have started just over half a ruler away from the Rolands instead of a full ruler (due to altitude difference).
Still, the nimble Nieuports could have run rings around the Albatrosses but for some unlucky damage draws.

In future games with altitude differences like this one I think my Adler will likely opt for the Halberstadt over the Albatros D.II
They do like the dual machine guns, though ….

I am down to three able Bulldog scouts, so depending on the next mission, I may need a new recruit or two, Dave.
I have lots of tandems, though, especially counting my French crews.

Your Adler pilots did good. I thought the Nieuports were going to take out Luke and R2D2, but I was wrong. Nice AAR! Looks like a good game! Good thing your Ace had Lucky Pilot!!!!

    Thumbs up

Your Eagles could do no wrong Pete!
The Sniper skills certainly paid off.
A bad day for the doggies but at least no pilots were lost.

Have some Rep for an enjoyable AAR.

Your mission matches Dave's with a sound thrashing of the British; although the outing could have been costly for Giesebrecht. Instead he's one away from triple ace. Well done.

I am overcome by a sense of deja vu Pete ! Good job he had Lucky pilot though !

    Onkel says:

Well done Eagles, your Kaiser will be proud of your efforts today. A screw-up in the paperwork has been resolved:
Ltn Max Jungbauer - awarded his Observer badge, an Iron Cross 2nd class and an Iron cross 1st class for his victory & service to the Kaiser.
He is most definitely in the chair this evening along with Günther Giesebrecht

    Meanwhile across the lines..

Your guys were unstoppable Pete. The Ace skills gave them a distinct advantage, coupled with poor shooting by the British pilots added to the fragility of the Nieuports, what a walk over.

Like you I was going to use Rolands but they would have walked away from my Nieuport 11's so went with Rumpler C1's. Let's just say it would have been better for my pilots if I'd used Rolands.

The big question is will Giesebrecht make triple Ace before the end of this campaign, I imagine that will make him Ace of Aces. Well done and congratulations.
    Cheers

I think I am due for a reversal of fortune, John. It seems I either have all the luck or none of it.

The Sniper skill has been my first choice for aces for a while now, but I was sure glad that I chose Lucky Pilot for Giesebrecht's second ...

I even paused my game to go and find the thread where Baz brought up the Lucky Pilot and whether it made one exempt from the boom card.
(The previous OTT campaigns had the Lucky Git, which did not.)

P.S. Onkel - I am making Duke A/Lt with previous A/Lt Gordon in the Infirmary for a few weeks and Lt Moncrieff still out of action.

Well, the dogs certainly got another whipping there for sure! Looking at their standard of shooting I think they better return to gunnery school when they recover. Well done the Eagles - almost a wipe out but not quite huh Those Rolands certainly take some beating too. Shall have to avoid them if I can And the "Lucky Git" played only just reminded me that I could have used that myself for my scout pilot in Mission 12. Oops. Completely forgot Drinks are on the Eagles then - and the hot dogs methinks

    Thanks, Mike.
Shirley you meant Bratwursts, not hot Dogs.

That was an out right arse kicking. Another shutout! Your boys are all going to be sent home to the flying schools to teach the rest of us how to do it right.

Herbert was one lucky boy to come out of that alive so some good news for the Bulldogs.
