Used to play huge multi player historical battles and to pass orders you wrote down the order and the umpire held the order until the dispatch rider Miniature(from whatever period) made it across to the officer of the unit you wanted to give the order to.

I used to play those type of games - great fun, especially when new orders made an enemy player (or Ally) suddenly do something totally unexpected!
