Thread: Devon UXB Detonated !

    Default Devon UXB Detonated !

A war time bomb, described as 8' long, 27" across, found on a building site in Exeter causing a mass evacuation, probably in more than one sense, was detonated with a controlled explosion...

Wouldn't want to be around if it wasn't controlled !

Apparently, despite being tamped with 400 ton of sand it caused damage to properties; the bang was heard ten miles away and it left a crater the size of a double decker bus.. Impressive !

The Sealed Knot equalled the size of that crater, at the Battle of the Dunes in France just with Black Powder, and the French asked if we could do it again! Fortunately ours was very controlled and no French property was damaged. Mind you the timer on that UXB must have been a very long one. From our experience sand is not the best thing to tamp down on gunpowder. Modern explosives, usually respond in a different way though.

Yeah, we had a lot of that in the last war..
Didn't see what it was identified as but the size could mean it's 1000kg+, that would certainly rattle your tea cups !

Yep, that would do it !
The SC1000 bomb - 2,200 lb usually filled with a mixture of 40% amatol and 60% TNT - nicknamed the Hermann by the Germans in reference to the portly Luftwaffe commander. How apt !
They showed it on the local news again tonight - they added a Flir image of the explosion, a lot of hot crud landed on nearby houses. Not sure that was in the plan !

Makes me wonder if there was or is any unexploded bombs in Darwin. That was a very popular destination for the budding Japanese tourist/bomber pilot in the day. Received more attention than Pearl Harbor I believe. No idea why really, not much there then.

Darwin was the Northernmost port and airfield in Australia. It was a critical post for recon and interdiction airstrikes against the East Indies and New Guinea, and a a jumping off point for the campaigns thereof.
It was considered vital to neutralize it for the defense of the new Japanese conquests there.

When I return I will have to dig out my copy of the book ‘ Australia's Pearl Harbour, Darwin, 1942’ for you.
