    Default OTTCYM - Mission 10 - Keep On Trucking - Sept 12-18th 1916 - by camelbeagle

    The Bulldogs Aerodrome
Alright chaps listen up! We got a milk run today. The army has 4 fuel trucks moving petrol for their new armored vehicles. Tanks they call them. The buggers drink petrol like nothing we have ever seen. Two of you are going to take those Nieuport 17s up and watch for any bosch fighters itching to cause a ruckus. We also have a Sopwith Strutter ready to assist in the mission. The trucks will also have an AAMG equipped truck to help protect them. Don’t get between them and the bosch or they may shoot you up. 2Lt Blake, 2lt Eddy, 2Lt Norris, AM3 Selby. Get suited up and get up there. Tally Ho!

    The Eagles Aerodrome
Attention! According to high command, the beefeater swine have a new armored tank. They need to transport some fuel to the front lines so they can keep them on the offensive. We need to stop those trucks and destroy the fuel to prevent that from happening. We have a new weapon ourselves. We have some of the new Albatros D.II Scouts. These are equipped with dual Spandaus. We need to see how these perform in the field. ObLtn Knacke, Ltn Bohme, Ltn Sessler, and Ltn Sauerbrunn get to your planes.

    Setup Notes
I will be using the standard 4 peg altitude. At altitude 1 the planes fire at the trucks with normal 2 card damage for short and 1 card damage for long. At altitude 2 the planes fire at the trucks with 1 card damage for short and 0 card damage for long. At altitudes 3 and 4 the planes are too high to attack the trucks.

Gun Jams: 1 gun will jam on a Green Jam card. Both guns (if applicable) on a Red Jam card. If you have dual guns and get a Green Jam card you can continue to shoot but at a B card. Cannot shoot and unjam the other gun at the same time.

Nieuport Optional Rule: Higher Machine Gun will be used in this game.

Climb cards are worth two climb counters. I am doing this to see if it can speed the game up a bit.

When overlapped planes are fired upon the attacker must declare the target as normal. If the damage drawn is a 0 then they miss and have a potential to hit the other plane. The other plane then draws a damage card.

I want to make this a bit more bloody. Therefore, I am going to use 2 RFC Scout planes, 1 RFC Two-Seater, and an AAMG equipped truck. This will make the convoy 5 trucks long. The AAMG truck will count as 3 points if it crosses the line.

The RFC will have two Nieuport 17 and one Sopwith Strutter. I do not have any British marked Nieuport 17, so I will use what I have as a substitute.
    2Lt Malcom Eddy - Nieuport 17
    2Lt D'Urban Blade - Nieuport 17
2Lt Fraser Norris /AM3 Edward Selby - Sopwith Strutter

The German will have 2 Halberstadt D.III and 2 Albatros D.II.
ObLtn Klause Knacke - Albatros D.II white backgroud maltese crosses
Ltn Alfred Sessler - Albatros D.II brown background maltese crosses
Ltn Justin Bohme - Halberstadt D.III camouflage
Ltn Otto Saurerbrunn - Halberstadt D.III brown

The bullets start flying fast and hard. The two sides, neither holding back, engage! Bursts of machine gun fire echo in the sky! Klaus Knacke's airplane starts to bellow black smoke. Fraser Norris and Edward Selby are very concerned as their Sopwith Strutter erupts in fire! Otto Saurerbrunn takes a bullet wound which hurts quite bad. Not enough to head back, but it will effect his flying. Justin Bohme and D'Urban Blake have their guns jam!

Fraser Norris is very concerned. He is too low to perform an Over Dive in hopes of putting out his fire. It is burning quite badly. Justin Bohm and D'Urban Blake beat on their guns and scream foul words about their armorers. Alfred Sessler dives down to low altitude to get a better look at the truck convoy. Klaus Knacke and Otto Saurerbrunn continue to strafe the convoy and they discover to their dismay that there is a Machine Gun armed truck firing back! Smokes starts to rise from the MG Truck.

Klaus Knacke dives to low altitude and continues to strafe the tuck convoy. Alfred Sessler gets his sights lined up and fires at the same truck. The combined attack of the two planes destroys the truck. Otto Saurerbrunn dives down as well, but the pain from his wound prevents him from firing. The MG truck fire at Otto Saurerbrunn tearing up the fabric in his tail. D'Urban Blake does a Split S so he can get turned around and engage the German Planes. Justin Bohme and Malcom Eddy both manage to get their guns working again. Fraser, being distracted by the flames, comes close to Malcom Eddy, but manages not to collide.

Klaus Knacke and Alfred Sessler fly by each other and give hand signal congrats! Almost too close! Justin Bohme attacks and destroys the MG Truck. The MG Truck does not go easily, giving Justin Bohme some mean bullets that tear through his plane. The three British Scouts have managed to get turned around and are heading back.

The truck convoy stops to remove the wreckage of the destroyed vehicles. Klaus Knacke starts to turn around so he can get lined up for another attack run. Alfred Sessler and Otto Saurerbrunn get to close and collide. Luckily, it was just a small bump. Justin Bohme shoots at the lead vehicle and smoke starts to bellow from it. Malcom Eddy sends some bullets towards Justin Bohme which tear through his rudder causing some control issues. Fraser Norris is getting really concerned over this fire!

Klaus Knacke continues the assault against D'Urban Blake. This time the Nieuport's engine starts to sputter and make a horrible noise. D'Urban Blake is very concerned about this. Fraser Norris lines his observer gun up and sends some lead love towards Otto Saurerbrunn tearing up more fabric on his plane. Otto Saurerburnn strafes one of the trucks, but misses. Alfred Sessler attacks the lead truck doing more damage to the vehicle. Justin Bohme continues to struggle with his guns.

Klaus Knacke continues to send lead towards D'Urban Blake. This time, the Nieuport's structure cannot take anymore damage and the brave Bulldog goes down! Fraser Norris is very concerned about the amount of damage he has taken and flees the battle. Malcom Eddy send more bullets towards Otto Saurerbrunn. Alfred Sessler attacks and destroys the first truck. Good thing he checked his bullets before he left. This allowed him to avoid a gun jam! Justin Bohme, who wished he checked his bullets, finally gets his gun unjammed!

The Nieuport cannot take the damage and breaks apart in the air! Malcom is also wounded in the exchange. Malcom's shots were perfect and ignite Justin's fuel causing the plane to explode!

    Thumbs up

Wow! What a set too that was. Smoke, Fire, Explosions, Engine damage & wounds. Quite the "Whole 9 yards".
That kept me on the edge of my chair for sure.

Sad about the result but at least all the air crews got home safely.

Have some rep for a most exciting AAR.

On the contrary! An excellent victory for our Adler.

Unfortunate that Saurerbrunn and Bohme will be out for the remainder of this campaign, but they shall return!
    REP on the way.

Well played Dan, that was quite the set to with planes falling to both sides but, objective achieved, so well done the Eagles

    Onkel says:

Well done Eagles, it cost us but that was a significant victory - all trucks left burning on the field, two Bulldogs downed and a tandem sent packing for the cost of two of ours downed. Both pilots are reported to have escaped their machines so we expect them back eventually.
Klaus is fast making a name for himself and is now one step from acedom.
PM me a name for a replacement pilot Dan - just one should do for now.

    One the other side:
Eddy managed to bag a couple, that's something but he won't be back for a while. Otherwise the whole show was a write off and the Tanks are stuck at the mercy of the Hun counterattack that must come.

A good fight Dan or a poor result depending on who you're rooting for. nice report either way.

I'm on my 2nd glass of wine which might account for it but I had a bit of difficulty following who was doing what to whom.
Stumptonian had the bright idea to put a pilot name tag on each plane, although he might not be the first but was the one I noticed first, and of course ShadowDragon incorporates the pilots name into the photo's. It might just help the reader with a low attention threshhold, probably just me, follow the story more closely.

It's only an observation not a criticism because we should all produce an AAR that we enjoy creating.

You've certainly hit the ground running with your games and reports.

I can't take credit for that (other than you noticing it first per'aps)

I believe I got the idea from "the other Pete" Teaticket when I first started following Over the Trenches back in 2015.

HHmmm... It is a nice idea. I will have to give it a go on Mission 11.

I quite like the name tags people use but if I used them I’d forget them in half the photos. Incorporating them in the photos means I never forget...and copy-paste is nearly easy enough but only nearly.

Other than my Aces I need the name tags to keep track of 'oo's 'oo meself - especially the Bulldogs - so it's not just for the photos.

Dan that was painful to watch and read. the cards fell badly but the tactics were good, having a AAMG should have helped but again its back to the cards you draw.

Fear not your mission was a decoy and the tanks got a refill at Watford Gap.

I'm learning to fly, but I ain't got wings

Paul, yes the cards were brutal. After the first exchange when I got the fire, pilot hit, smoke, and two jams I reshuffled the cards a few more times.

That was a blood thirsty mission and no mistake. The result is absolutely appalling of course, he says with a tear in his eye Well played and thanks for a very entertaining report. Rep inbound. But next time just get the Adlers to behave themselves will you, please? According to my lads they are supposed to lose - every time
