Thread: February Workbench 2021

Wow! No one else started the fire so I will. Needed a few Arado AR-196's for my battleships and remembered these in the kit library . . . 1/200" scale, molded in clear with a crazy PE canopy frame. One box makes 5, so here we go!

I wanted to do a Staaken R.VI for Shapeways, mostly because there aren't any available in 1:285/6mm scale. But once I started researching, I found there were a lot of differences between individual R.VIs, including:
    • Later models and refits added a central fin and rudder for better controllability.
    • At least two had ladders and platforms that allowed the two engineers to man rear-firing guns on the upper wing.
    • Later models and refits had balanced ailerons.
    • The last three, produced by Aviatik, did not have the stepped nose. The pilots were in an open cockpit on top of the fuselage.
    • R.30/16 had a supercharger driven by an extra Mercedes engine in the fuselage. While you can't see the engine itself, you can see its intake louvers, exhaust, radiator, and air-cooler.

So I made three models instead, R.25/16, R.30/16, and R.52/17:

Very nicely done! I eventually built several of each one including 3 on pontoons! What I will ever do with 18 Staakens I know not, but they are so cool!

Another slug of painted figs. The 13.5 mm Yanks are from last months Wargames Magazine. Got 2 copies so working on the Confeds right now. Have a box set with 24 more sprues in the works but not going to be here till late spring /early summer. others are my weekly hobby store stuff.

For those of you that don’t look in the painting showcase, I just did one of the Walrus models. I like the end result, but it was a rocky road for me to get there. I have an Arado and Kingfisher in the queue as well. I look forward to seeing Clipper’s Arado when it’s done!

I suppose I should be painting the Valentines today (they are technically the Rooskie ones that I got because they were 40% off with free shipping, but into the desert they go!). But it seems Somebody Else in the household wants some mechy guys painted, so as long as I have the Bronze Green out, primed, and gonna do these dudes today.

Thanks Chris, normally I use Little big Men transfers for the shields but this job was a bit on the cheap. He bases them after he gets them so I suspect he does other touch up jobs also. I will paint a theme for a few months then he does a 3 x 3 display case in the store with his terrain and buildings and mostly my figs. Last one was a western town all the cowboys I did for him ended up in. He was also working on a WWII Pacific island landing with Japs and Marines I did but not sure where that went. Now it is mostly Civil War but he ran out of figs so had me do a box of Saxons to keep me busy for a while. Did get almost 200 WWII German Heer for Flames of War though. Planning on dropping off about 35 figs a week to keep within the guys weekly hobby budget (yep, they tell me some people do odd things like that).

It's nice to see some armor on the work bench. My brother Bob (BB401) and I have been accumulating and building up forces for an upcoming conflict in early March. Besides aerial WoG combat, we are going to ground in Bolt Action with the 1/56 scale miniatures. Rubicon and Warlord kits so far. Plastic and Resin and Metal kits with crews! Here are the ones I have done. You can see detail and technique for mine and Bob's and all models of various kinds at https://theatomfurnace.blogspot.com/Click image for larger version.

My wife and I are holidaying at Victor Harbor for the week (still got to 31 today though) so I packed my travel modelling kit hoping to get my King Kong miniature well under way.

So far I’ve got the first coat of black down. Travel kit equals no airbrush!

When you get to the base... I recommend putting a lot more thought into it than I did . I was so excited to try re-basing that I used grass etc. from a kit I had purchased for "some day". Now I have a 3'x4' mat of Manhattan being printed and it occurs to me that my Kong is standing in grass... on top of the Empire State Building...

I’ve already carved almost all the original base off and am planning metal pegs into the feet that will plug into corresponding holes in my roof section that sits on top of my game mat. I’ll do this when we return home and I have access to my trusty Dremel.

Yes it is. I bought it recently to replace a home-made one and it is so much better. My home-made one was ok but the lip was too high and I occasionally had trouble getting the under lying sponge at the best level of dampness.

I love looking at other people's paint jobs, so thanks for the photos - if I ever get my Shapeways models 100% finished I'll put a photo up.
WW2 African campaign armour has always been an interest, so it was great to see them here too.

I am back at home base now and so have access to all of my modelling tools and a bench top with a magnifier!

I’m thinking now that I should have painted a base coat of very dark grey followed by a black wash. I think that would have been easier than a base coat of black followed by a dry brush with grey.

  46. #46

    Default

Looking good Wayne As an intermediate tone/step you could try making a very thin dark gray glaze and hit the larger areas for an intermediate highlight -- upper thighs, outer arms, top of head, belly, etc, all but the dark recesses. Better if it's too thin even if you need to glaze some areas twice, and easier if it's darker -- you can always lighten it some. He'll look a bit botched but then your drybrush in a lighter tone will bring up even more highlights without too sharp of contrast.

Both methods are classic highlighting strategies, I agree the one you describe is probably easier for most of us (starting with the mid-tone base then washing it darker then highlighting). Think of it in reverse; you've established the shadows, now you're going to paint in the mid-tone in a thinned down glaze.

lol -- my unsolicited advice. That's what I'd try, but Kong is gonna turn out great regardless.
