    It was a gas detection patch that was supposed to change colour if the pilot flew through a cloud of poison gas, presumably at low level. Not sure just how effective it would have been in practice but luckily nobody ever had to find out.
    It was only a feature of early war aircraft (most day fighters were supposed to carry them) and the use of these patches stopped sometime towards the end of 1940 though I think a lot of squadrons stopped bothering to use them earlier.
