Default Just Random ramblings of my own Novice experience so far

Well, after my self-introduction in the appropriate Forum section, i though i would just post some randomness, so i fully expect this thread to drop rapidly, but... i want to "stay current".

I was introduced to Wings of Glory just last December. I was looking to get out with my best friend (we are old school geeks), and he had been playing for a while. It was just a demo game at our local hobby store (Your Hobby Place in Martinsburg, WV. USA). For me it was just a "grab and go". I borrowed a plane (Nieuport 28, i believe) and sat down. I was hooked and bought 2 of my own planes the next day. A Spad X.III and a Phalz D.IIIa.

After that, the others had organized an introductory campaign (I have no idea how official it is, etc. - i know the planes being flown are from all over the place. A Nieuport 16 and a Sopwith Snipe, etc. - and no real cohesion to represent say, a specific squadron as there will be a Phalz D.IIIa with a Fokker Dr.1, and an UFAG C.I) I do know that there is VERY high attrition rate among the pilots. We play 1 game for 3 different sectors, and two flights in a day. My personal pilot roster is as such:

Albatros D.V Scout Johann Allmenroder -
Fokker Dr.1 Scout Linus Wach 1
    Phalz D.IIIA Scout Offenbach 2
Phalz D.IIIA Scout Luther Martin 2
    Roland C.II 2-Seater Stephen Pfautz / Hans Lubbert -
Sopwith Camel Scout Karl Braun -
    UFAG C.I 2-Seater Neo Phyte / Karl Schmitt 1 / 0

The numbers at the end of each row is the number of missions they have flown... so.. yeah... i am just getting started. The highlights of my games are:

Offenbach was my very first pilot, flying in the first model i bought for myself. Other than that, not much of note. He was just my first. Named after a former employer, who happened to be from Germany.

Luther Martin was my 2nd pilot, because i could not fly the same pilot in 2 different sectors, on the same day, in the same time slot. He is my favorite. His first mission, he got shot down by a ground machine gun nest, while trying to shoot down a balloon that was almost to the ground. He survived the crash, escaped immediate capture, and got back to his own lines... (as per what the guy running the campaign had me do... he drew 0 damage for the crash landing... then had to roll a 6 to evade immediate capture, then had to roll snake eyes on 2d6 to successfully make it home). In his first flight back, we had complete cloud coverage above us. 2 Germans vs. 4 Allies. My partner got shot down before i could really do much, so i quickly climbed in to the clouds to try and get a favorable position, or just escape. For 6 turns, the guy running our campaign had me plot out the cards, etc. (a total of 18 cards) until i either said that i just fly off, or come back down. When i decided to come back down, i placed a marker on the board saying that was where i would come back down. I came within "short range" of the measuring shooting range marker. I was actually stunned.

Neo Phyte came about because i volunteered to be the plane that needed to land to rescue two other downed pilots. I have volunteered to learn how to perform recon missions, landing missions, etc. in the two-seaters. I love the challenge of learning how to pick the cards, etc. to accomplish what needs to be done.

In our campaign we have 1 guy running, and tracking everything. 5 pilots. 3 Allied, and 2 German - although, we probably have another newbie (like me) joining us this week. We've slowly been incorporating rules so that we are all on the same page. Our next mission is a German Bomber escort. I am hoping to share pictures after.

I've not had a chance to fly my Allied planes in the campaign, and i only ever flew a Nieuport when introducted. My "hanger consists of:
    German
    Albatros D.V
    Fokker Dr.1
    Phalz D.IIIA
    Phalz D.IIIA
    Roland C.II
Sopwith Camel (Captured) - i named the pilot Karl Braun (Charles Brown - )
    UFAG C.I

    Allied
    Bristol F.2B Fighter
    RAF S.E.5
    Sopwith 1.5 Strutter
    Sopwith Camel
    Sopwith Snipe
    SPAD XIII

I am still saving up for more, but the selections were really hard to come by before Christmas, etc.

OK, i have bored you all enough.

Sounds like a really good start John. Being able to jump into a campaign right off the bat will get you a lot of air time so you'll sharpen your skills quickly.

As for planes, get whatever you can as soon as you can! Once they are gone it is a long time for them to be re-released. Until then they go for crazy money.

Thanks. So far, that has been my plan. I am bummed about the long gaps in between availability... but your reply has given me food for thought. I just might start picking up 2 of each...

    Hello John

Welcome to the Drome. Sounds like you had a great introduction to the game. Dive in and enjoy - from across the Pond

wow! sounds like great fun. frankly im kinda envious as its pretty much me and my buddy tom here so doing a campaign would be a bit silly with 2 guys.

John, it sounds good that you have others with whom to play the game. It does make learning the game easier, and more fun too.

I started off with just a few planes that a friend gave me, and in the little group my friend was part of. Since then I have bought one or two or three planes at a time when I have had opportunities.
One of the things this WoW/WoG game has done for me is teach me a lot about aviation in the WWI period. I never knew there were so many aircraft, and I marvel at the rapid development in just five years.

    Likewise!

Seven short years ago, I could name Manfred von Richthofen, Roy Brown and Georges Guynemer, all thanks to 'Airfix' kits.
    Plus Goering, of course.

Now I can match dozens and dozens of pilots to their personal colour schemes, and have acquired an extensive library of books and magazines for research purposes, not to mention a huge collection of minis.

More importantly, this "little game" has opened up personal access to a warm, friendly and welcoming worldwide community of fellow enthusiasts, and I have been lucky enough to meet a number of them in person at events here and in Prague.
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!

Yeah, just two is hard to go a campaign. Maybe the 2 of you team up, using the solo rules?

I am not a social person by nature. Not in person anyway. I've had a life long interest in WW1 aviation. But this game has really renewed my fascination with the era, and gotten me out more. I'm a lithe bummed about do many events being canceled due to Covid, but for me, it might be a good thing. Expose me to the euros more gradually.

We are playing again tomorrow night. I how to do a decent after action report.

    John,

You sound hopelessly doomed like the rest of us to appreciating and learning more about the history of the WW1 air war, this community, and our little game.

When I first started here around Oct 2019, a member here (clipper/Dave) sent me a coveted plane, and I was firmly on the hook from that point on. It's time to pay it forward and augment your hangar. Would you please PM me with your shipping address?

Welcome John, Please do not forget about the WWII arena either. There are some really good looking planes for that game (just in case you have any money left).

Can't find a good spot for something (as usual), but this isn't too far off. Man, did I luck out. Although I have 62 years worth of aircraft info on WW2 (first book, Famous Fighters of the Second World War by William Green, Hanover House,1958, purchased by my mother Beatrice at G Fox in Hartford, CT, Jan 3rd 1959 for her then 10 year old son, because he asked her to. The book cost 5 or 6 dollars, a tremendous sum at the time. I still have this first book, pride of place in my 2-3K volumes, mostly military history), I am VERY fortunate to have taken up something new (WWI aircraft, about 13 months ago), so it was bound to happen, I decided to try a WoG WW2 aircraft. Bf109, Hartmanns, of course. Well you all know something I didn't know, imagine my complete and utter surprise when this plane flew in, and I open the box to find something from a "Honey I Shrunk The Kids" movie. Dang, this thing looks tiny? Down to the cellar to compare with 50-100 Flames of War TRUE 1/100 aircraft (not the junk FoW sell) and a few 1/144 WW2 kits I own. Well, like I sed, you knew but I didn't, the stuff is 1/200 or so. I would DEARLY love to know the profit margin on these. I cannot begin to imagine. And these aircraft I am about to assemble for WW2 have NOTHING to do with Wog2. I want them for 1) a conversion of a board game involving USA daylight missions over Europe, 43-45, and, board game conversion of some nightfighter vs. Brit bombers...........etc. This Me 109 will be listed eventually, prob here in the drome. So, I learned something this week, like I do every week. 1/200. You have got to be kidding..........
    cheers mates.

I'm envoius John, I've been playing with small aeroplanes for about 2 years and never played against a live opponent. I joined the OTT solo campaign on this forum and It's held my interest ever since.

I don't know why but the number of planes in my hanger keeps expanding month by month and I think Teatickets advice is sound.
Enjoy your campaign, it would be good to hear how it goes.

Played a while ago when it was Wings of War then during a large cull sold off my stash dirt cheap, nowe returning and paying the price.

Huge love of history especially military history but clearly was lacking in WW1 aviation side of things, other that Blackadder but have since been researching more.

    Enjoy.
