Obltn Bernhard Wienand had his best pilots gather around a small table and showed an area where the Entente forces were sending supply convoys up to the front lines to resupply their tank units.

Leutnants Giesebrecht, Huebner, Oelker and Eisenhardt looked on intently while Baumann and some of the two-seater crews wondered why they were going to be left out of the action.

“Baumann, sei bereit, falls eine Verstärkung benötigt wird.“
< Baumann – be ready in case reinforcement is needed >

Looking at Wiechers and his crewmen he adds
„Dies soll ein schneller Streik sein - rein und raus, bevor die Briten reagieren können.“
< This is to be a swift strike - in and out before the Britishers can respond. >

“Wie Sie wissen, haben wir zwei der neuen Albatros D.II erhalten.“
< As you know, we have received two of the new Albatros D.II >

“Giesebrecht ... Hübner ... als die führenden Asse des Geschwaders möchte ich, dass Sie diese Flugzeuge auf Herz und Nieren prüfen.“
< Giesebrecht ... Huebner ... as the leading aces in the squadron, I want you to put these aircraft through their paces. >

“Nun, meine Herren, zeigen Sie das Oberkommando, dass sie die richtige Jasta als eine der ersten ausgewählt haben, die die neuen Maschinen bekommen.“
< Now, gentlemen, show high command they have chosen the right Jasta as one of the first to get the new machines. >

With that, the scout pilots snapped to attention and left to get their machines ready for action.

[Note: I used some Nexus cards I had handy to draw for the Adler aircraft. 8 Halberstadt and 5 Albatros cards were shuffled and drawn]

Soon the four pilots were over enemy airspace and approaching the area where the convoys had been spotted.
Giesebrecht is flying the yellow Albatros while Huebner pilots the camouflaged D.II.
Oelker and Eisenhardt each have a Halberstadt D.III in the brown livery formerly preferred by Huebner.

First impressions of the new machines were not all positive.
Both Huebner and Giesebrecht had noticed the climb rate was not on par with the Halberstadt, and the machine also seemed less maneuverable.
The only good thing they both had noted was the dual Spandaus instead of a single barrel.

How effective that would be was soon to be tested.
A convoy of four vehicles could be seen. Giesebrecht and Huebner had designated that the Halberstadts would handle the ground attack, while they would provide top cover.

    Total Adler Victory!

    ====================================
Well that went much better than I expected.

I am always leery of sending my fliers deep into enemy airspace for a whole mission.
Giesebrecht (who wasn’t set on fire for once!) added 2 kills to his tally, and is now just 2 away from Triple Ace – can he make it, with just two missions left?

Two more Bulldogs out for the remainder of the campaign.

It seems promotion to Lieutenant is the kiss of death.
I looks like Charles Gordon is next up to bat, Onkel.

Depending on the requirements for Mission 11, I might scrape by without requesting new pilots – I have 4 available – and 5 full tandems, counting two from Aviation Militaire.

As I hinted in Vagabond’s AAR, I was not as thrilled with the Albatros D.II as I thought I would be.
In a game like this last one that incorporates altitude, their Climb Rate of 5 is dismal.
I missed having the wide sideslips at my disposal as well.
Their saving grace is the ‘A’ Damage Deck. Been a while since I have used mine.
Time will tell which of my pilots use them going forward ….

As far as the mission, I think the Entente needed a 4th aircraft, and probably the truck AAMG as well, to have a sporting chance.
    But I’ll take the win.

It was good to get my partially modified N.17s to the table as well. All I did so far was replace the roundels. I need to get some matching aluminum paint before I can add the other markings.
They are the ones OldGuy59 had made by mscmini for his Prague mission.

Well done, Pete. X fingers so Giesebrecht makes triple ace. of lager in the mess!

Interesting your comments on the Albatros. I’ve found the climb rate of the N11 was a significant factor when fighting the EIII.

Nicely done Pete - a clean sweep for the Eagles, you must be chuffed. I concur with your thoughts on the Ententes needs, I definitely felt we were a little light on balance in this encounter. I'm surprised your pilots did not mention the extra speed their Albs had over the Halbs - faster is better !
The ratty climb rate didn't come in to it for me in this game due to my Alt rules; as I play peg for climb chits this all took place at low level, nosing down & up where needed to shoot.

    Onkel says:

Ausgezeichnet ! Well done Eagles, you have cleared the skies and literally stopped the Englander's attack in its tracks !
Everyone came home safely and there's a full roster and bar a few holes to be fixed the machines are all serviceable.
It doesn't get much better than this - tonight we celebrate

Meanwhile on the other side of the lines...
Uncle is upset at the loss of Moncrieff & Moore but at least they survived and he'll look forward to seeing them back in the fight one day. At least Glen made it back and relatively whole.
HQ were not happy with the result but 'c'est le Guerre' as they say in these parts.

2Lt Charles Gordon becomes A/Lt as the longest serving pilot currently available. Wish him luck - he'll need it !

Well done pete. I am suprised you didnt include a AAMG truck just to give you an edge over the DII planes. While I like flying the N11 its low damage score means it can easy fodder for the likes of a Halb and an A firing DII .
Still points to the Centrals . Just as a matter of interest how far in turns did your convoy get before it met its doom?

Excellent mission for your lads and a fine showing. I'm impressed with Giesebrecht having 13 kills, I thought Huebner was your top scorer, I'll have to have a look and see, makes my lads look like amateurs

I flew my 4 Albatrii as D1's to avoid giving them too much of an advantage in the scrap and used what I consider my best planes the FE2b against them to try for an even balance.

I'm interested that you think altitude and climb rate act as a handycap usind D2's against Nieuport 17's. Am I right in thinking you have your own version of altitude rules? I've printed Dave's out but have yet to read them let alone use them.

The Nieports looked nice, they look darker than what I thought the stock Ares plane does, I'm not a fan of the silvery aluminium colour and I have 2 kit planes to paint and might go with your darker colour although maybe it's your lighting?

Can't say I noticed the speed difference because the Halberstadts were down chasing the trucks the whole time.
I was glad my D.IIs didn't have to climb back up during the game. 5 vs 3 is a significant difference.
When I used them back in Early Doors I wasn't using altitude much so didn't really notice.

Yes - I use a system that breaks each altitude down into 'virtual chits' and allows small increments of altitude change for most cards played, with specifics for Immelmann, Split-S and Dive

My Nieuports are the Nexus Lufbery/Thenault - it's probably my poor lighting that makes them appear darker.
I specifically bought several from Clipper's sale of Hunter's collection.

I still have 2 to keep in French colours, as well 2 of the Thaw/Lufberry Ares version and a bunch of Nungessers.
I was going to use Baracca because there are no roundels to cover up, forgetting that the underneath is the Italian flag.

Once I get the aluminum paint and add the missing decals they will turn them into Ball, Bell-Irving and Bishop.

I had always intended to 'decal up' some of my Nieuport 11s but never got around to them in time.
    (kinda like my Bristol Scouts)

So it wasnt a short scenario then On a straight run with no halts for damaged trucks it should have taken 10 turns so they had a chance to get there.

Paul, the last photo before the Butcher's shows the tanks that were two turns away when I stopped the game.

    Thumbs up

Congrats on a convincing win Pete.
Your eagles certainly won the day.
Glad no Allied pilots were lost in the encounter but our Tanks will be running on the smell of an oily rag by now.

I was glad my D.IIs didn't have to climb back up during the game. 5 vs 3 is a significant difference.
When I used them back in Early Doors I wasn't using altitude much so didn't really notice.
The Albs are in the next speed band so the pilots would notice that, so if you can't out climb you can at least out run !

Well, the Bulldogs got a proper trashing in that one and no mistake. I guess the Albatross DIIs made the biggest difference. Oh dear watch out Bulldogs from here on in this campaign

Congratulations to Ltn Günther Giesebrecht for his two kills and I'm sure Uncle is more than happy with the extra paperwork we are all causing him at this stage of the campaign - glad to see you are making your contribution there

    Sorry Dave

    REP my friend.

Well, that was quite the clean sweep. Cleared the sky and the convoy with no loss, just like clockwork. Looking like you have an very good shot at making for triple ace for Giesebrecht.

Went well - much better than I anticipated.
I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
