Pilot Ernst Gruber (Baxter) and his crew thought they would pay London a flying visit. Just a quick in and out dropping bombs on any one of many targets. Gruber was flying a Do17 with a 20mm forward gun instead of the normal 7.92mm. That meant that any allied plane that came within half a ruler distance of Gruber's nose was going to cop a C damage card.
In the first attempt, Gruber decided to fly up one side of the map in recon mode and then perform a turn towards home, hopefully dropping his eggs on one of the juicy targets on the way out.
Unfortunately he was spotted by a couple of patrolling fighters, a Spitfire (Windy Jack) and a Hurricane (Mark). Although he weaved and dodged about, the Hurricane managed to latch onto his tail and eventually bought Gruber down. An exchange of fire with A damage chits for B damage from the Hurricane was never going to end well!
With the Spitfire closing fast on his tail and the Hurricane tenaciously hammering away even though on fire Gruber went down for the count!
After a player shuffle where Mark took over Gruber's plane, Windy Jack the Hurricane and Baxter the Spitfire a replay commenced. This time the bomber would head straight for a target in the first half of the map and then bomb one in the second half before scuttling back to base. Or so the Germans thought ...... Again the bomber went down, although he did manage to destroy a busy market target. Neither Spitfire or Hurricane came within a half ruler length of the bombers nose so did not suffer any C damage. Both fighters consistently managed to hit the bomber time and time again until the weight of damage downed poor Gruber yet again!
Perhaps it was a bit arrogant to think a single bomber could achieve a good hit and run result or maybe Gruber should have had a fighter escort. What do you guys think?
