    Default OTT CYM Mission 9 “Who’s Stalking Who?” 5 September 1916 {Stumptonian

After a raucous evening of eating (and more than a little drinking) Oberleutnant Bernhard Wienand called his pilots away from the bar.

“Meine Herren, es ist Zeit, die Dienstpläne für die Missionen von morgen auszuwählen.“

<Gentlemen, it is time to select the rosters for tomorrow's missions.>

Holding six straws he held out his hand to Leutnant Till Huebner.
“Sie werden die Ehre haben, zuerst zu zeichnen.“
<You will have the honour of drawing first.>

Huebner drew a straw and held it behind his back without looking at it.
The Adler performed this ritual every evening when there was no specific mission to be assigned.
The next day’s missions would be simple search and destroy patrols, looking to contact enemy formations, or if they were lucky, stragglers looking to make their way home.

Next up was Leutnant Burkhard Baumann. Like Huebner he drew his straw and held it behind him.

Leutnant Günther Giesebrecht ambled over and drew a straw, followed by Leutnant Dietrich Oelker.

Leutnant Felix Eisenhardt approached but was waved off by Wienand.

“Ich brauche nur vier für morgen.“
<I only need four for tomorrow>

„Mein Glückstag! Ich werde morgen spät schlafen.“
< My lucky day! I'll sleep late tomorrow.>
Eisenhardt winked at Wienand, knowing that was not the way things worked.

The four pilots laid their straws on the table.
Those with the two shortest straws would be assigned to the first mission of the day – Morgendämmerungspatrouille < Dawn Patrol >

Giesebrecht cursed under his breath as he saw he had the shortest straw.
Huebner accepted his fate a little more cheerfully.
“Na ja, frühes Frühstück für mich.“
< Well, early breakfast for me. >

    Baumann and Oelker smiled.
They would get a bit more sleep tonight.

The next morning, Giesebrecht and Huebner found themselves climbing their Halberstadt D.IIIs toward the front.
The nip in the air reminded them that autumn was not far away.

    Notes and Observations

A decisive win, but I am sad to lose Bulldog Lt Robert “Don’t Call Me Bob” Lewis
With 4 kills he was just one away from becoming an ace.
None of the other Bulldogs are even close.
I would like to recommend 2Lt Duke to take over his position.

I think it’s time to retire those Nieuport 11s – I should have swapped them for N.17s ages ago.
For some reason I didn’t think the RFC got them until late in the year.
Would have made a big difference in this game.
I rolled to see which pilots I would be up against and had them fly their ‘usual’ machines.
    Hindsight is 20/20
    Especially in 2020

I would have liked to see one of the missions with the attack coming from 6 or 7 (preferably mine)
As it was I drew to be the target both times.

I also think there should have been some benefit to the attackers in phase one when they are not coming from the tail.
I considered using an altitude bonus, but don’t like the odds of drawing a zero and negating the +1 advantage, so didn’t do that.
Perhaps the side without the incentive should have to fly toward 12/1 for the first phase?
Or maybe give them an inherent ‘Itchy Trigger Finger’ bonus for the first turn?
Anyway, I like the concept – just needs some more tweaking.

When David emptied his drum I forgot to use his inherent Weapons Specialist skill (even though I had an ace chit on his base to remind me)
I suppose it was because it wasn’t a jam, but I think swapping the drum should get the same benefit.

Nice to see Giesebrecht finally get his second ace skill, and Oelker now just one away from getting his first.

And, finally, didn’t I say I would prang the FRTB roll.

With double sixes, no less, that I have never to my recollection rolled when it counted for something good!
    Luckily Baumann walked away unscathed.

I hope you guys like the mission and can do as well as I managed.
I suppose this means that the next mission will be deadly for my guys again …

A couple of cracking 2 v 2 bruising actions for the Bulldogs there Pete, congrats to your Eagles. Thanks for trying out the FRTB crash option - Box cars, typical ! At least you rolled well on the C/W chart.

    Onkel says:

Excellent work Eagles, four victories, the Kaiser will be proud of you.
Ltn Günther Giesebrecht is awarded the Order Pour le Merite - The Blue Max (BM) for his victories and service to the Kaiser. (Lucky Pilot confirmed)
Ltn Dietrich Oelker is awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class for his victories and service to the Kaiser.

We hear 2Lt John Moncrieff is promoted to Lt as most experienced pilot still flying for the Bulldogs !

A great victory for the Kaiser, Pete.

Can't say I'm looking forward to matching Halberstadt D.II/III and Albatros D.I with the Nieuport 11.

    Another Blue Max pilot!

The drinks were extra special in the mess that evening, with an additional toast to fallen Bulldog Robert Lewis.

I had thought of recommending Moncrieff myself, but then thought I would nominate Duke (since he was always Lewis's wingman) forgetting that he had not escaped yet and was not just nursing wounds.

Thanks for the compliments, Dave, Iain and Paul.
It was a fun one to play and my Adler drew decent damage cards for a change.

I think N.11 needs 3 to 2 odds to have any hope at all.

    Bring on the N.17*

    * which means I need to get off the pot and get them decaled.

I had meant to have roundels on the N.11 by now.

Alas, no Nieuport 17 for the RNAS. The RFC nicked them. A problem I knew I would face in the latter part of the campaign.

    I think I will roll for the opposition: 1-2 = E.III; 3-5 = Halberstadts; 6 = Albatros D.I

We could have had them since July (maybe 60 sqn swiped them all !) but I'm just bringing them in now having been through the N.16's.

From Daryl the plane-counts from the 31 Aug 1916 Frontbestand include:
    D and E class: 64 Fokker E.III; 20 Halberstadt D.III;5 Halberstadt D.II; and maybe the prototype Alb D.I and D.II
    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...l=1#post521179
    So give yerself a break and go with 1-3 = E.III; 4-5 = Halberstadts; 6 = Albatros D.I !

    Thumbs up

    Well played Pete!
Your Eagles certainly claimed the Sky in that one.
A sad day for the Bulldogs with the loss of Mr Lewis. R.I.P.

Blimey your Eagles were certainly on top form today, it was a very one sided result even though it didn't seem it in the game. Fire Flames and Booms.

Just reading your follow up comments I may have missunderstood the original game outline. I had one patrol arrive behind their targets, 5 or 7 oclock, can't remember offhand but I let the targets fly in a straight line for 1 turn. It made no difference because they were all the same speed and so didn't close the gap at all.

An enjoyable read and I enjoyed my game so thumbs up all round.

Well, that morning patrol was short and sharp - Good shooting Mein Herr. Shame about Robert, "Don't call me Bob". Or was that Kate? (On the other hand you may never have heard of Blackadder ) Anyway - RIP Robert.
The Afternoon patrol was even worse, from our point of view Four kills in one day! Not sure we'll have enough schoolboys to replace the pilots, even for a short time. Well done your Adlers. I guess they'll be having a celebration or two in their mess tonight and for the next fortnight.
Well played Pete and thanks again for a great mission - rep inbound

PS Almost missed this as I write my reply before reading others - Congratulations to Ltn Günther Giesebrecht for his Blue Max. You can be sure that my boys will get him if we can

4 for 4 like clockwork. And you wanted to come in at their 6? What challenge would that be for you?

Your Eagles keep clearing the skies. My Jasta want to invite them over to give us some instruction to better our flying. Of course we will open the bar in the mess when you're here.

Thanks, Peter, but I don't think it's due to any skill on my part (although the ace skills definitely help) - I have just been having a string of luck with the card draws of late.
Hoping I can continue that stretch into the final mission of this campaign.

P.S. oh - and the N.11s probably played into it. I bring on the N.17s for the next one.
