Thread: Death of a balloon or Rahn gets another kill

Default Death of a balloon or Rahn gets another kill

I went to the Air Force Museum today and saw the collapsed
WW1 balloon they have. In talking to some of the volunteers
who work there it suffers from dry rot and they are currently
looking into how to bring it down without any further damage.

Great photographs, Bill. Dry Rot is not something I would associate with a balloon. I think of it more in terms of wooden objects.

I guess the rubber/material combo just gives out eventually - sad to see as it's an impressive display for a visitor.
Perhaps they should hang some mock flames above it for now !

Sad... this is IIRC the last Caquot in the world, painstakingly conserved in the 1960s.

One wonders if there could have been some kind of "preventative conservation" done regularly to prevent things from getting to this point... or if they shouldn't have had a replica crafted for display. IIRC many aircraft in the WWI hangar are replicas anyway...

What a shame........hope they can recover it, then fix it.

Thanks for sharing Bill. It has been a very wonderful display. I hope they can repair it. Wouldn't be the same without it.

ApCray. That's a real loss. Hopefully they can secure and restore it.

It was even more so to stand under in person as a kid.

Sad news indeed. Glad I got to see it in happier days a couple of years ago. Hopefully it can be restored.

Nearly anything can be restored by the experts, *provided* they are given the time & money. Hope some of both go towards this worthy project.
