    Default Playing online WWII

    Hello everyone

About 6 months ago I started a online player group for World War I. Last week with the help of Teaticket, we ran a game of tripods. This week I am running a game of World war 2. To give it a try. If anyone wants to play this week we could use a few more players. Just send me a pm if you want to play or watch. I have a very limited number of spots for watching on the Zoom side and unlimited on the Youtube side.

I generally open the zoom call at 6 pm est and try to get the YouTube feed up at 7 pm est.

Hope to see you there. I will post the YouTube link for this game and any future game in this thread.

    Thanks

    Mike

Well we had out weekly online game and this time WW II. Wasn't sure how the WW II version would work this way but it came out good. Had a good time trying to protect the Kates and Vals attacking the Yorktown. Lasted the whole game with 11 points of damage on my Zero. Others were shot up pretty good. Maike does a great job putting on these games and deserves all the thanks we heep on him. Thanks again

This sounds great. Sorry I just missed last week's event. It this weekly or monthly that you all do it? I can put the next one on my calendar to watch, if you know when it is. I can' believe I missed seeing 2 PTO theaters in action.

Thanks for tuning in! With the schedule that we are trying to keep, we should get at least 1 WWII per month. I plan for 2 games now, just in case the first one is over very quickly. At the beginning of the year we have a series of games based on the Winter War (Finland vs Soviet Union) that should be ready and we may do several weeks in a row with WWII. If you miss a live game, you can always go back and watch the replay of the video. i keep them all on my YouTube channel so anyone can go back and watch what they want! The Next WWII is slated for November 18th. No games on Nov 11 and 25.

Fokker CXs were always high priority targets for the Soviets. If the spotters hung around too long in any sector, the Soviets were quick to scramble Fighters to go after them. The Fokker crews, however, were not easy targets.
Using steep dives to the ground and dodging at tree top level, they more often escaped destruction than not. The Following Mission will test your survival skills.

    18 December 1939
Soviet I-153s attacked the Fokker C.X Head on and missed. The I 153s did an Immelmann turn to attack again, making multiple passes before breaking off.

Soviet R-5 spotter biplanes were hard to catch. Soviet troops would radio or signal them at the first sign of approaching Finnish aircraft, allowing them to rapidly retreat back
behind their lines. In addition , the Soviets would scramble nearby fighters to assist them. On 29 January, Lt Karhunem, Flt Mstr Turrkka and two others took out 2 R-5s directing
Soviet artillery fire over the main defense line at Summa. Using clouds to mask their approach, they successfully bounced the spotters. Lt Karhunan and Flt Mstr Turrka flamed
the first R-5, but the other pair only damaged the second. Turrka was able to catch and finish it off, after which, the Fokkers retreated before a reaction force of I-16s could
    intercept them.

3 July 1941 -- Recently promoted, Sgt. Lampi was on a local patrol with Flt. Mstr. Turkka when they spotted three I-153s on the deck below them. The eager Sgt. Lampi
immediately dived on the enemy without clearance, only to discover that he had not yet turned on his gun sight or charged his guns. He tried to slow down to get time
to cock the guns but overshot the enemy and all three got on his tail. Having bled his speed off, he could not shake them, nor could he dive away due to his low altitude.
Things looked grim until he heard Turkka's voice on the radio: "Don't worry Sonny, Daddy is coming to help." Flt Mstr Turkka blew up the I-153 on Lampi's tail and
damaged another. The third fled. Sgt. Lampi got scolded in debrief, but worse than that, ground radiomen had heard the call and the nicknames, "Sonny" and "Daddy" stuck
with these two for the rest of the war.

Last week the Robert ("Sonny") did a great job trying to fly away from the Soviets. While the results were not what the Finns wanted, the combat was good. After the first 3 missions the running score
has the Soviets up 61 to 30. With 3 missions left in this campaign there is still plenty of time for the Finns to catch up!

    Boyington's Bastards
    Mission 1
    First Flight for Chennault

After the Attack on Pearl Harbor, the American Volunteer Group moved all but one squadron into China. The
last squadron was stationed at Rangoon for its defense. Boyington's First combat in Rangoon was at best a
debacle. After being jumped a unit of Ki-27 Nates, the Pilots of the AVG failed to follow the teachings of
Chennault, as a result they lost that engagement. Three days later 20 Ki-27s would again attack the Allied
defenders. Boyington was one of the ten aircraft that engaged the Japanese. During the combat Boyington
claims that he set his first Nate afire. While Boyington claims this as his Kill, he was never giving credit for it.

Tune in and Find out how many Ki-27s survive or if the P-40s meet their end!

    March 22, 1942
Chennault choose the ten best pilots at Kunming to attack the bases at Chiang-Mai and Lamphun. Six Pilots from the Adam & Eves (Neale, Boyington,
Bond, McGarry, Rector, and Bartling) would attack the Japanese AF headquarters in Southeast Asia. Four pilots from the Panda Bears (Newkirk, Lawlor,
Geselbracht, and Keeton) would attack the Base at Lamphun. The results of these attacks, results vary depending on the source, fifteen enemy planes
were burned, and the credit for the destroyed aircraft is shared equally, giving Vice Squadron Leader Boyington credit for destroying two and one half
enemy aircraft. This brings Boyington's total to four and one half enemy planes; two of which were destroyed in aerial combat, and two and one half burned

Gregory Boyington left the American Volunteer Group with a dishonorable discharge. After making his way
back to the United States in July 1942, he managed to reenlist in the U.S. Marines at the rank of first lieutenant,
the rank he’d resigned in August 1941. On November 24, he was bumped to the rank of major and in March 1943,
he deployed as executive officer of VMF 122 from the West Coast to the Solomons. He was based at Espiritu Santo,
initially flying squadron training, non combat missions. In April Boyington took over as the commanding officer. He
lost that command on June 7, after breaking his leg in a drunken wrestling match. In July he was given command
of VMF 112, which he commanded for three weeks in the rear area, with no combat missions.

    Bye Bye Black Sheep
    The King is Gone

    On 3 January 1944
Boyington was leading a patrol in the air around Rabaul. This patrol had a mixture of aircraft from
the US Navy and Marine Corps. Boyington and 7 other Black Sheep of the VMF-214, 8 Corsairs from
    VMF-224, 12 Corsairs from VMF-211, and 16 Navy Hellcats from VF-33.
The Japanese had already detected the American and dispatched 70 aircraft in response. Thirty Three
Zeros of the 204 Kobutai, led by Lieutenant Yamaguchi, climbed away from Rabaul before turning to
intercept the Americans. From the airfield at Tobera, Lieutenant Nakagawa of the 253 Kobutai was
leading another 37 Zeros. It was elements of the 253rd that were spotted by Boyington as they were
    climbing over Rapopo.
The Americans split up and commenced overhead attacks on the Zeros. This contact was confirmed by
the contact logs of the 253Ku right down to the minute. Shorty there later the 204Ku joined in on the fight.
Boyington dove on and downed his 12th aircraft as a Marine. As he continued into the fray, Boyington
disappeared from sight and would be presumed lost. It would not be until the end of the war that it would be
confirmed he was captured and made a POW.

After citing the events of June 9, 1943, theater command determined that the 99th was not capable or disciplined enough for front-line duty. The 99th
was stripped of the P-40 Warhawks and reassigned to the lesser P-39 Airacobras. In addition, the 99th was also reassigned back to North Africa where
most of their missions were limited to sea patrols and other Defensive duties.

Just a few months before being reassigned back to Italy, the 99th was again issued a different aircraft, the P-47 Thunderbolt.
This was a major upgrade to the P-39 Airacobra's they had been flying. The 99th used the Thunderbolt to great effect and
destroyed multiple ground targets in the very short time they used them.

Welcome back to the Second installment of our mini campaign based in the Spanish Civil War. Last
week the Lories did some fancy flying and used the cloud cover to help most of them escape. This week
we are parading out some more slow crates, Fiat Cr.32s vs Nieuport NiD-52s. All of these missions are
loosely based on real events, so please enjoy and see if we can change some history!

    Hi Mike,

I'm just curious. What references/sources do you use for creating scenarios. They're great.

    Thanks

For me, once I pick a pilot, unit, or battle, I go to Amazon I search for and buy a few books on the subject. I form a timeline of events and drill in on those events. At this point I will have a rough idea of the planes needed. Once I write a rough draft, I will try to have a planning meeting with another person in the group to double check the game balance and polish the special conditions being used.

I have a template that I used to fill in the important details and wah-la we have a scenario.

    Mission 5
    Republican Refit

    August 1938
After receiving newer Soviet aircraft, Republican Forces initiate a massive offensive at Brunete,
west of Madrid. After the initial advance, the Legion Condor was regrouped and moved south to
the Madrid area. The Legion took command of all the German and Italian Air Assets to lead the
fight against the Republican Offensive at Brunete. This brought over 200 Nationalist aircraft
under direct Legion control. Initially the Republicans gained Air Superiority, after a few days the
tide began to turn as the Nationalist forces began a counter offensive of their own. Under Legion
Condor leadership, effective use of the Legion's flak guns and the employment of its Bf-109 squadron,
the Nationalist Forces gained control of the air from the Republican aircraft. The Bf-109 would quickly
prove to be superior to the best Republican fighter, the Polikarpov I-16.

    Today’s mission: Ground Support

    Mission 6
    The Battle of Ebro

    October 1938

The Spanish Nationalists carry out a Series of Offensives that push the Spanish
Republicans back across the Ebro River.

During the 3 1/2 months of fighting, the Legion played a key role in the close Air
Support of the Nationalist forces. This included interdicting Republican communications
and other logistical targets. Major targets of the Legion Condor are Army Bridges and
Ferries that cross the Ebro River that are utilized by the Republican Forces.

By Mid-November, both Armies sustained heavy losses that the Spanish Republican could not replace.

    Today’s mission: Bombing Raid
Targets varies Bridges and supply depots.

    Aircraft:
Team Republican: 4x Polikarpov I-16 Type 10 at Alt 3
