This is a twist on one of Teaticket's OTT CYM Mission 6 - Dog Day's of August scenario options.
The twist being it's not a raid on Dover by the dreaded Hun but a raid on Zeebrugge(ish) by the dreaded Tommy with a slightly different deployment plan to allow for a longer run in and give the Hun a chance of an interception. As it was their random deployment placed them fairly well and I added in a third to give them a chance.
So here it is:
Here's the target - The 'ish' in Zeebrugge-ish !
Here come the raiders in echelon left formation - all two seater Strutters - looking pretty sat over the SoG mat used for the Channel.
They do not come unopposed though: Halberstadts on the beam to the right & one dead ahead approaching over the town:
The gunner of the lead Strutter (C2) opens the batting with a long range effort but his shots have no effect - due to the vagary of bases and angles the plain D.III (K) doesn't have a shot.
Strutter C2 becomes the meat in a Halberstadt sandwich taking effective fire from the plain D.III (K) turning in on it's tail and the blue D.II boring in from ahead
As they turn in to line up on the target the other Strutters get embroiled in the fight. The two tone one narrowly avoids a collision with D.III (K).
The cammo D.III jams his gun as he lets loose at close range on two tone one but takes a hit from the other Strutter's pilot as he moves across to join his pal.
C2 breaks right to realign himself for a bomb run on the port area - this puts the blue D.II in his gunners blindspot and he passes unharmed.
Two tone's gunner gets scores a long range hit on D.III (K) but the other fluffs his close range effort on the cammo D.III that escapes the pass unscathed.
Turning back the other Strutter lights up the cammo D.III causing significant damage but the blue D.II manages to squeeze a close range shot in as he passes his colleague and the Stutter starts to trail smoke.
Rounds fly in all directions as the Strutters try to break past their foe. D.III(K) causes damage to the two tone one but jams his gun in the process, The two tone gunner fails to make an impression on the cammo D.III as he clears his jam but the pilot of the other one manages to wound the pilot of D.III (K) as he passes close aboard the cammo one.
As the Strutters break through the gunner of the other Strutter scores a hit on the cammo D.III.
Ahead of them the other two Strutters try to get lined up to hit the port
A minor disaster for the other Strutter as the blue D.III exchanges compliments with it's gunner - both protagonists are hit, the gunner falls to the floor of his cockpit, the Hun pilot concentrates on getting out of the fight .
Tow tone drops his eggs in the vicinity of the port and the streets behind
The other one has similar luck as he unloads his eggs in the same vicinity
Sadly both pilots were so busy on their bomb runs that when they looked to escape the collided. Two tone got away scot free but the other one took a heavy knock
The blue D.II adding to his woes was he heads for home but his gun jams with the effort
C2, failing to line up on the port itself and not wishing to hang about any longer, drops his eggs into the town centre hoping it will frustrate fire parties heading for the port.
The pilot of the other Strutter damages the controls of the D.III (K) thus preventing him from giving chase - a shot that may have saved his bacon.
Two tone leads C2 out of the cauldron - parting shots handed out all over - more control damage caused
D.III(K) presses on and clobbers Strutter C2 with a close raking burst - surprisingly taking no damage from the return fire of two machines
C2's gunner gets a modicum of revenge as they head out to sea and leaves D.III(K) smoking behind them.
As the remaining Halberstadts were pointing in the wrong direction and the Strutters had the legs on them they called it a day and the battered Strutters flew out to sea .
