Thread: Night bombing mat

    Default Night bombing mat

WIP of my night bombing with full moon map
Not really managed to take a picture , the reality is more of a mix between the two, the clouds are not so white.
The last one is overexposed but the first is not quite that either

I think I'm going to widen the cloud area to have this atmosphere instead without the black area around

So it gives you lots of ideas,
Bombing on London in 1940 (I have to find some boulton paul defiant in 1/200, it's not going to be easy
London with the zeppelins in 14/18 (even if there are a lot of flames)
    Germany in 44/45
Japan (I don't know if there was night bombing)
    Etc ....
Sorry ,the photos are poor but I can't seem to do better in my garage.

What great mats! They could be used for Zeps over London.

You mentioned finding 1/200 scale models of Boulton Paul Defiants, Fox.

Shapeways sell Boulton Paul Defiant models by Kampflieger. There are separate pages for single plane prints, printing two together and printing four together. https://www.shapeways.com/product/ZD...li=marketplace

Warlord Games Games sells Defiants in a squadron pack of 6 for their game Blood Red Skies.

Armaments in Miniature also sell Defiant models. http://www.angelfire.com/nj4/armamen.../resin09mm.htm

I suggest that you use the same Wings of Glory base as the Roland C.II with no forward gun, so that the turret has a very wide firing arc. Keith can make some for you in the Aerodrome Store, if he has none in stock.

    Nice map.

Have to spread some rep before shooting the rep gun again.

That is one heck of a map and certainly adds real flavour to a night mission, well done, rep guns blazing

Really nice mat Fox. I really have to make something like this to use with my night rules.

Fox, your mat is dramatic! It gives new meaning to background, with the fires below hinting at the destruction left behind. Your illluminating clouds look like being lit up from searchlights below.

As a photographer you may be interested in the night photography taken to check the aim point:

Is there a chance for a scan and uploading to Files? The mats looks great!

Thanks, a scan would be difficult, it's a painting mat, perhaps a good photo can do it .

Theoretically it is possible: There are copecentres where they can scan even original masterpieces, but it is probably expesive and you are a player, not a charity so do not spend money on it

Great looking map and I am sure it will give many people ideas of a night bombing game. I have played in one of Teatickets and it was something different and fun.

I forgot to say previously what a great mat that is, Fox.

The Americans did carry out night bombing raids against Japanese cities using B-29 Superfortresses. As the war progressed the Americans switched from using high explosive bombs to incendiaries.

!/200 scale die-cast models of the B-29 Boeing Superfortress may be purchased on eBay.

    Thanks
For pacific I play in 1/144 and I have got 3 B29, but I think my map is not big enough for 3 B29 .

The B-29 incendiary raids were flown at very low level, so the ground detail would need to be bigger, and the cloud cover removed.

Thank's for information Tim but I'm not going to change the map juste to fit "history" for one mission, like I don't re-paint the planes to fit the historical dogfight.
    You do this?

    Of course not!

I just wanted to point out that David's information about the multiple US fire raids only told half the story.

Your mat is perfect for Blitz raids on London, or fire bombing Hamburg, Dresden or Berlin, but is not so suitable for fire bombing Tokyo.
