Thread: 3D printed peg for F-Toys fighters or any 1/144 fighters

Default 3D printed peg for F-Toys fighters or any 1/144 fighters

I have designed a 3D printed peg for insertion into any model that allows it to be mated with the standard altitude peg. I have made the file available on the Thingiverse website here:

Here is a shot of just the peg - I printed this example in orange to show the concept but printed a number in natural filament - the closest to clear that I could find.

I needed a way to mount my Richthofen and Goering Albatrii for use on the game table.

All you need to do is drill a 3mm hole in the bottom of the model and then superglue the peg into the hole - the short end of the peg!!

I'll add more photos to show the steps involved.

Brilliant. Have some rep for the share.

I am sure others will think of another way to use this. Rink magnet to this piece and the bearing in the planes.

Thanks for the good work, keep it up.

    Here is my blow-by-blow description of my process;

You will need a 3mm twist drill, superglue, small file to clean up hole and create a flat spot for the peg base, paper clip to apply super glue and tweezers.

Use the 3mm twist drill to create a shallow hole for the peg - the F-Toys aircraft have a slot for a display base in exactly the right spot. The plastic is soft enough for you to just use your fingers to rotate the drill bit.

Here is my 'Goering D.III under 'construction':

Once the hole is cleaned up and a flat spot created, apply a small amount of super glue around the hole, then insert the peg using tweezers:

Allow the glue to dry before attaching to a D.III base:

Rinse and repeat for as many models as you need to.

Two more D.IIIs to my collection, now to print the appropriate cards for them. Now where did I put my F-Toys SPAD??

Cards printed and laminated. I even had a spare J deck in my stash!! Does anyone out there have a J deck surplus to requirements - I have quite a reserve stash I could swap from in return!! PM me if you are interested.

Of course the last step is to produce the required stands. I remembered a thread from long, long ago on this topic and after a bit of searching I found it:

    Yay!

    And also this thread:

Nice, now there is something to use for the balloon mounts.

The balloons use the thicker bomber pegs. That will be my next design task - watch this space!

So, I’m curious, any other good sites to hunt for 3D balloons? Thingiverse has one nice allied one but I’d really like to grab a good German sausage one as well.

I have now uploaded a similar peg suitable for large bombers or balloons. Rather than create a whole new entry on Thingiverse, I simply added it to the existing entry. See:

    https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4579367

Note that you will need to drill a 5mm hole in the bottom of your miniature for this one.

Excellent! I have tried, and failed, at this particular project.

Well, it took me a few goes to nail it! Faulty digital calipers didn’t help until I realised what the trouble was!
