Default OTT CYM Mission 6 – Flash Dog Days of August – 12th August 1916

As things had gone the massed long range raids into Belgium had so far been a milk run for the bulldogs - they'd hit their target, a railway station out toward Ghent, though what good it would do in the great scheme of things, who knew.
Lt Terry Bull and AM1 Jack Dawe led the way home in their FE2b #4, followed by 2Lt Justin Hale & AM.2 Reg Sole in #6.
They were trailed at some distance by 2Lt Chris cross & AM.3 Ric' Shaw in a Strutter

In sight of safety things went sideways rather suddenly with the appearance of a pair of German scouts to the left of the formation..

Having turned in alongside the formation the Halberstadts close rapidly - In pursuit of the lead machine Kirmaier leaves himself open to some abuse from Reg Sole as he climbs and his machine blows smoke.... Letting down slowly behind the second machine Busse pumps rounds into the bulk of the FE

Reg pours more rounds into the white scout - he must have angered the pilot as it veers toward them unleashing a short range burst. Rounds crash through both airframes - has Reg hit the pilot ?
Busse is confused as his second burst appears to do no further damage.

Another Halberstadt D.III climbs up from the right of the formation to cut off Bull's escape. They exchange short range pleasantries - the controls are damaged; Dawe's gun jams and he falls back into his nacelle.

There - splinters ! Finally Busse is rewarded for his efforts as he drops in behind the FE - Hale glances back as he feels the rounds smash home and sees the blue machine..

As Reg works on his gun Hale, put off by a fast approaching green Halberstadt, swerves left - he needn't have worried as it reverses before them and the white one switches sides. More rounds clatter in behind them and Hale senses more than sees fire bloom from behind them..

Swerving seems to put off his blue tormentor as no further rounds hit the machine - maybe he's jammed. Reg gets his gun going again and lets rip at the white one but seemingly does little damage

But the old FE has taken too much - the flames have done their bit and the machine starts rolls away - Cross can only look on in horror.

Moments later Bull exits the battle area as Cross exchanges with the white machine himself - the snap shot does nothing but the return fire damages his controls - he hears the ripping burst of Shaw's Lewis behind him as he takes a pot shot at the reversing blue machine

Shaw empties his gun into the white machine as it appears from under their tail the shot is devastating and the machine tumbles from the sky - some measure of revenge for the other chaps.
Even as he sees this Foldes feels his machine tremble as the climbing blue machine, trailing flame, clatters him with a close range shot and the green one has a pop too. It's suddenly getting a bit hairy !

    Great game, thanks Peter.
Foldes cannot seem to get a victory and Kirmaier's luck finally ran out - hopefully Achilles can improve on his equally bad record leading the Eagles.

    Uncle says:

Well that was a rough ride home and no mistake - half the chaps on the sick list and or missing will make it tough for future missions - may need replacements. Still, we bagged the Eagles flight leader by the sound of it so some small consolation and worthy of celebration

AM.1 John (Jack) Dawe is awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his victory & service to the King as well as Croix de Guerre étoile de argent from our French allies. Long overdue.
AM.3 Richard Shaw is awarded the Military Medal (MM) for his victory & service to the King as well as Croix de Guerre étoile de argent from our French allies.

Great job, Bulldogs. One tandem lost but but the crew will be back.

RIP Obltn Willi Kirmaier Seems you're also cursed with the rolling '5s' for C&W with exploding airplanes.

Thanks Paul, Willi was cursed I feel, so the result comes as no surprise. Achilles is back in charge but also not any great shakes in combat either. We shall see if that has changed in his time out. I hope so as it's nice to see a strong leader. His opposite number, Bill Foldes, has little luck either !

    RIP Obltn Willi Kirmaier
He gave all he could for the Kaiser and Fatherland

This mission looks to be a tough one for our Adler so far.

    Well played and presented Dave.

Was this the first use of your new 'man cave' ?

No, it was not Pete, that was one from my garage. I spent today prepping and varnishing the floor of the orderly room - in fact I just got in from laying down the third coat ! I need to let it harden off for 72hrs (oh, Matron) before I can move in, however, I may wait until the power/lights are plumbed in in a few weeks time before I do, so nothing is in the way for that. Meantime I'm looking at table & storage options as well as things to hang on the wall, of which there are plenty !

I know that all too well.
Way more 'things' than wall in our house.

    Thumbs up

Well that was a great tussle Dave.
Well done in securing a win even though you lost one Fee. Glad to see the crew survived.
    Congrats to the medal winners.
R.I.P. Oblt Kirmaier who gave his all for the Kaiser.

Thanks Baz, I enjoyed the game, it played a little oddly due to the randomness of the Eagle arrival that allowed Bull to escape after just one pass on him but at least he saw a little action.

Lots of lead flying around and some great flying. Nice story Dave, shame about your lost pilot but at least he was on the other side.

I like the idea that the lattice of poles made the Fee harder to hit, imaginative idea.

WoW - huge amount of gun fire and so many "0s" coming out - that must have been a bit frustrating. Great work done by the Bulldogs though. Good job too 'cos my lot completely blew it

The Fee going down was a shame and the loss of Obltn Willi Kirmaier will be felt back with the Adlers - RIP

Congratulations to Richard Shaw and Jack Dawe for getting the shiny ones Drinks in the mess I presume

Well that was a bumpy ride. Looks like you pulled all the special damage cards!

Funny that the duo downed behind the lines somehow got home and will be back in action before Jack Dawe who flew home. Must have been a serious wound, at least he'll be back.
