Thread: A great gimbal mount variant for your aircraft

Default A great gimbal mount variant for your aircraft

I have made a few joints over past 10 years but this one works the best. It can hold even heavier arcraft without falling over even if you shake it.

    Tools and stuff:
    1. An epoxy glue (5 minutes 2-componet works the best)
    2. drill with 5 mm drill bit
    3. saw to shorten a peg

    Thingies:
    1. two pegs
    2. 6-32 acorn nut - like this https://www.lbuytiq.com/index.php?ma...ucts_id=625309
    3. a magnetic bed for the nut top - like this https://www.unimagnet.cz/kr-08-6-3-5-03-n_z229/
    4. a tooth pick

    Step by step:
    See the picture below

    1. Use a 5mm drill bit to drill down to the flat part of the nut till the ball top pops off.
Use a toothpick to spill an epoxy glue blob into the ball top and stick a shortened peg in. Let it dry.

    2. Glue the magnetic bed on a peg.

    3. Done.

This is another form of gimbal mount, for banking, pitch, etc? Not sure; the second attahcment is not viewable at the moment.

I read ‘joint’ and was expecting something else, lol

Yeah. I was thinking it was going to be a hangar, or shed. Perhaps a storage option? But this was cool.

Yeah, haha gimbal mount is the keyword. I can't correct the other picture via my phone. I will do it when i am back home.

This mount is a bit harder to make but works like a dream.

Ahh, smart idea going with the acorn nuts! I've got a bag full of bearings, otherwise that's the way I'd probably go for my gimbals.

I too thought of a different kind of "joint", and was wondering how to avoid the accompanying 'smoke' damage card................

Ingenious solution Honza. I have been reverting to the Bomber Magnets for heavy small aircraft but this looks superior to that. I will have to try it and then go for a trip in my aircraft!

Good idea but I have to agree with the others about the "joint" name.

    This may work

or use a keyvord similar to this
    "8 x 3 Neodymium Countersunk "

As this one is 8x3, you may just need a bit bigger acorn nut, so it nicely fits into the bed.
Do yourself a favour and remove the hex ring from the nut, it has considerably more metal mass than the ball part and attracts the magnet making it knock over.
