Thread: "Curve" or "Turn" or "Sideslip" ?

  1. #1

Default "Curve" or "Turn" or "Sideslip" ?

    Hi,

    hopefully you can help...

The BoB rulebook, in particular with reference to the "Automatic Airplane Movement" rules, refers to "turns", "sideslips" and "curves", but I cannot find a definition of what those terms specifically refer to in the rulebook, and the difference between them.

As an example, the rulebook says:

Each time the discard pile contains one curve to the right and one to the left....

    and further on:

If there is another turn or if there are sideslips in the discard pile...

Does a "Curve" refer to cards like the one on the right, where the direction of the plane changes? And a "sideslip" is like the card on the left (where the direction of the plane remains the same)? Are "turns" and "curve" synonymous ? And a sideslip is not a "turn" but a "curve" is? or are they both "curves" or both "turns"?

    Hi,

It took me a while to understand that automatic airplane movement.

I would say turn is synonymous to curve: your right card is such a thing.

The card on the left is a side slip.

According to page 12 where rudder jam is explained the generic term would be "maneuver to". Above side slip is a maneuver to the left and above curve=turn is a maneuver to the right.

    Hope this makes sense

Ricky, "turn" and "curve" are synonymous and appear as pictured on the right.
A sideslip isn't a turn and appears as pictured on the left
Directional arrows on the bottom of the card obviously give you which direction the manoeuvre is made,
You can slip left or right but your direction of travel doesn't change.

So, each time the discard pile contains one turn to the right and one to the left shuffle them and any straights/stalls back into the deck etc ....
If there is another turn or if there are sideslips in the discard pile and so on ... means, for instance, if there were two lefts in the discard pile before you discarded the right turn you'd leave one of the lefts (and any sideslips) in the discard pile.
