Thread: The Ford Trimotor

    Cool The Ford Trimotor

Back in 2018 I got the chance to fly on an EAA Trimotor out of TICO in Titusville FL. It was an awesome ride; you really got a sense of the "old world" opulence of travel a 100 years ago. The pictures are located here: https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/al...p?albumid=4563. One interesting thing, the engine gauges are located on pods on the nacelles themselves!

One thing I can say, it was much louder than I thought it would be! Not overbearing but I can see being a bit fatigued if you had a couple hour flight.

Very non professional videos here: https://youtu.be/DO1EPiM2i20 for the takeoff and
    here: https://youtu.be/KtlsjL6mknw for the landing.

I did not realise that the landing gear was attached to the motors! That must have increased the maintenance effort.

I flew in the copilot's seat of a Ford Trimotor in 1972. My photos from a stop on the EEA's 2016 Ford Trimotor tour can be found here.
So how many books are in your personal library?

They were used extensively for smokejumpers in the 60's when I lived at the airfields for the summers. Very LOUD! My best friend took his initial jumps training in them in the early 70's. Impressive aircraft. Thanks for the memories . . . Click image for larger version.

Smoke jumping, not a job I’d ever want!

That’s pretty cool. Was it for a job or fun?

And this Trimotor is from your neck of the woods. Have you been to its home base?

I guess it was for fun. It's how a bunch of teenage campers got to Rattlesnake Island in Lake Erie off the coast from Sandusky, Ohio. It was my first time in an airplane and I sat in the copilot seat. I was so excited I never asked the pilot any questions.
