Default WW II D E USS Slater on Hudson River Tomorrow

The WW II Destroyer Escort USS Slater (the last WW II era D.E. still afloat) will be brought down the Hudson River tomorrow past my place on its way to Staten Island for a refit. I will try to get pictures of it as it goes by if weather allows. Please see story:

Nice to see at least one still afloat. Hope you get some photos.

The ship my dad was on was scrapped in the early 60's. This is the ship that lead the US fleet into Tokyo after Japan surrendered. Go figure.

There's a haze on the water this morning -- but the Slater isn't due past until around 11:30 AM local time, so I hope it burns off by then.

My Father's ship was scrapped too, and after service in three theaters of operation in WWII, and active service in the Korean War. It is a pity we don't preserve our naval heritage. One thing I was lucky about was that my Father's sister ship (USS Kankakee) was in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1960's and he took me over to see her (I have old B&W photos somewhere of the visit). This was the ship on which my Dad returned from Japan.

The ETA for the Slater in my area is now revised to 1600 hours -- I'll try for some photos!

Well the USS Slater passed my place today and I have to say it was exciting -- the last WW II era destroyer escort afloat. As it passed my place it sounded its siren -- I was ready to man battle stations! Here are a couple of photos (I took WAY too many) and when I find the video that doesn't have my finger in the way (I've got skills) I'll figure out how to put it up here as well. I've spent the better part of the afternoon humming "Anchors Aweigh".....

Glad you all liked the photos -- here is a link to the ship's website in case you want to know more about her -- she fought U boats in the Atlantic and Kamikazes in the Pacific.

The ship is scheduled to return the first week of August, but no word on when museum will reopen. Your could always make the Council of Five Nations next year a road trip and run up to Albany for a visit to the Slater....

Now there's an idea. Will have to put this in the calendar.
