Ebay is fickle at best. I had an unpunched rare wargame. One that was punched went for $240. I put mine up a week later. The 2nd place bidder of the previous auction for a punched copy stopped bidding at $100 for mine? Go figure.

    I won't. Just double-checked - I have 3 but 2 are for the decals I bought this summer.

I paint a lot of minis and planes. I feel more connected to the ones I've painted than to the official ones. If I painted my own Schaefer I'd probably never put the Official one on the table again. At that point why have it? I have a decal for it so the clock is ticking....

Is it better to buy Ares for repaints than to get Shapeways?

    Depends......

For Fokker D.VIIs I prefer Nexus/Ares, particularly the "Schafer" with the wing lozenge on the upper and lower surfaces of both wings. Plus, you can carefully remove the upper wing, to allow "Fokker streaky" or lozenge decal application to the fuselage, and lozenge decals to the "inner" wing surfaces. Plus, you get base, pegs and deck! (usually)
The Shapeways planes need clean-up, and have very limited access to the areas between the wings, so are only really suitable for single-colour application, like my all-black Jasta 7 birds. They are, however, much cheaper.

    P.S.
In addition, I don't like mixing different model manufacturers in the same unit: they often look substantially different (eg Nexus/Ares horrible Albatros D.IIIs, compared to F-toys sleek-and-slim Alb.D.IIIs, compared to Shapeways beautifully-shaped sharks!). Once I have started a Jasta, I will only add to it if I can source the same models.
I have 3 Nexus Jasta 12 D.VIIs already, 2 Jasta 11, and have gathered 9 "Goering" Nexus D.VIIs to do Jasta 40 at some point (tail units are already all-over white! )

Well, that depends on what you want to do. I like using the Ares because I have a base and a set of cards already. And that depends if I can get a plane. But for Fokker DVII and some of the more rare I would personally go with shapeways because the cost of the planes can be high. It comes down to personally preference. I am working on some Italian Nieuport 17. I am using the Ares because I could easily get them. Now for something like the Fokker, or Sopwith Triplane I would get shapeways because I can get a lot of shapeways for the cost of one of those right now. I can get bases for the Aerodrome Store, and I can put together a deck of cards. Again, these are my personal opinions and I know everybody has a different one on this subject.

Flying Helmet makes a grand point as well. The Fokker's do have the wing lozenge already there and putting that on a shapeways can be challenging.
