Default OTT CYM Mission 3-The Oxymoron of Military Intelligence -July 19th 1916-gully_raker

    Part One

All Aircraft in Part One were flown at Level Three!

Uncle called all the members of C Flight into the Squadron Hut.
"Right Chaps! Listen up. GHQ are in their usual flap. With the big push due to start tomorrow they have received intelligence that the Germans have assembled two big Ammunition dumps behind their lines & we need to destroy these before we commence our attack. Now Time is of the essence so we need to photograph 4 possible sites & get the photos back ASAP & then mount a bombing raid on the two most likely sites after the boffins study the photos. Then we will attack those targets"
"Now our resources are limited with only 3 x 2 seaters serviceable & 4 scouts including the shiny new Nieuport Lt Fife-Brand has just picked up from St Omer for evaluation"

"So Reg how do you think this should proceed?" "Well Uncle" said Reg Fife-Brand "I think it most important to get the photos so I suggest we send the Fee with Lofty Hill & Alex Quartermain & the CDL Strutter with its regular crew of Downton & Abbey to do the photography & I will run Escort in the Nieuport along with F/Sgt Stark in his DH-2"

"Right" said Uncle "Make it so!"

Shortly afterwards with the aircraft prepared for the mission the 4 aircraft took off & flew towards the co-ordinates provided by the Intelligence Corps.

On the German Side of the lines Oblt Caul-August Schwartz the Staffel Fuhrer had detailed Ltn Arntzen in the Green Fokker E.III & Ltn Thiede in his CDL E.III to fly a racecourse circuit between the Ammo dumps to be ready to attack any enemy aircraft which should approach. He, in his Halberstadt D.II & Ltn Rudiger in a Grey E.III would be ready to reinforce them if necessary.

The British aircraft had paired off with a scout attached to a 2 seater & they were separated to Port & Starboard to minimise the distance they had to fly to reach their respective co-ordinates.

As the Strutter approached its first target it came under fire from German Flak which was fortunately off target however they saw the approaching shapes of a Hun Halberstadt & a Fokker making towards them.

On the other side of the battlefield the FE 2b was not so lucky & the German Flack battery caused shrapnel damage to the Fee's Engine. "Bugger!" cursed Tiny "Crook luck to get a hit on the Beardmore right at the start of our run!"

    { At this point I thought what would I have done if I was this pilot? I decided I would press on with the mission & try to get these important photos. However after the game was finished I had second thoughts re the rule requiring engine damaged planes to return to their home base asap. I PM'd Dave (flash) to get his opinion & it was decided that the Fee could not fly on after the first photo to obtain the second photo so the AAR has been modified to show only one photo obtained by the FE 2b}

The British scouts accompanying the Fee now returned the complement with Fife-Brand damaging the engine of Ltn Arntzen's Green Fokker.

They followed up with another burst which slightly wounded the unfortunate Arntzen. (missed the +1 for this damage! Rusty after the lockdown!)

As the Strutter took its first photo it came under fire from the Halberstadt & the Fokker of Ltn Rudiger. Whilst 2nd Lt Downton wounded Rudiger & caused further damage to his plane the Strutter's engine was damaged & Schwartz's shots damaged the Sopwith's rudder.

As he flew on towards home with his two photos John Downton gave his gunner Max Abbey a great shot at Rudiger's Grey E.III. His shots must have hit its fuel tank because it exploded in spectacular fashion & crashed a burning wreck to the ground.

With only one German aircraft left flying, fuel & ammunition both low Oblt Schwartz reluctantly turned for home as both the British 2 seaters were way beyond reach even with damaged engines so the combatants all headed towards their home bases.

    Observations

Well that started out badly for the Brits but apart from their engine damages things definitely improved as the game went on with the poor old Hun copping the worst of the damage cards
I really enjoyed being back in the Campaign & look forward to flying Part 2 later this week. Thanks to Paul for a most enjoyable BRF!

Looks like the Eagles got a spanking again Baz & the saves were not the kindest ! Look forward to seeing part 2

Seems that the Bulldog luck held in spite of the Eagles' best efforts to spoil the party

    Uncle says:

Well done chaps, let's crack on with the second half...
Excellent work chaps - two targets hit, a Hun in the bag and you all got back in one piece. Time for a pint I think

    Default OTT-CYM-Mission 3--OMI- Part 2-- gully_raker.

    Introduction & Set Up

As required by the BRF I rolled a D6 to add to the 3 Targets photographed in Part 1. This resulted in a 5 + 3 Targets = 8 which meant the 2 genuine Targets were identified.
I rolled a D8 to see which of the 4 targets were genuine. This resulted in Targets 1 & 2 on the BRF plan being the genuine Ammo dumps.
I rolled a 4 for the entry point for the 3rd German Scout.
I used Dave's D8 charts for both parts & Zoe's Altitude rules for Part 2 with the Bomber starting at Level 5 & all other aircraft at level 4. I flew the Bomber with all other planes controlled by AI.

    The Mission

Ltn R Fife-Brand had ensured both returning Scouts were re fulled & re armed ready for the bombing mission. The single seat Strutter Comic would be flown by 2nd Lt. "Taffy" Evans & the Scouts would be reinforced by 2nd Lt Jon Snow in De Havilland C 3.

When all aircraft were ready the 4 British aircraft took off & headed for the Target Zone.

On the other side of the lines Oblt Caul-August Schwartz called the 2 available pilots together & impressed upon them the importance of keeping the "Verdammit British" from destroying the vital ammunition dumps that had been photographed. He still smarted from the fact that 3 of his Kette had been shot down trying to stop the reconnaissance.
He would fly the circular patrol in his grey Halberstadt, which had suffered only minor damage, along with Ltn O Schoenfelder in a CDL Fokker E.III whilst Ltn J Lotz would be lurking in a green E.III ready to support them as required.

The British planes spread out & approached the target area with Taffy Evans heading for the dump where our chaps had destroyed the Flak emplacement. He would dive to level 3 for his bombing run to avoid any Machinegun fire from the ground.

Taffy in the Strutter had also avoided any problems & was well on his way back home after a successful mission..

    Comments & Thoughts

Well the luck of the damage draw certainly was on my side again in part 2. I kept waiting for the turn but it did not come.
I suppose the 2 German pilots who made it back to base after Fires & wounds thought they were pretty lucky anyway!

    RESULT:

    1 Ammo Dump destroyed = 10 pts
    1 Ammo Dump partial = 5 pts
    3 sites photographed = 3 pts
    4 German planes shot down= 4pts

    TOTAL POINTS = 22 Points = VICTORY

Well played Baz, that showed them what for ! Might need some replacement Eagles for the next round depending what you roll, it'll mostly uses tandem crews but let me know if you need another scout pilot.

Great job, Baz, with some nice pics as well.

    Rep on the way.

    Just one problem ....

I remembered that I only had one bomber as well and could only attack one target.
I wondered why, and looked at the BRF again but didn't see it.

Until I scrolled down a bit:

Sorry Paul. Another question: During part two - Does each tandem carry a single bomb load, capable of destroying or partially destroying a single target?
Or is a single tandem able to split its bomb load between two targets and still achieve a full or partial hit towards the victory points on offer?

Just one load, Mike. I suppose you could split it but then you'd score only half damage for a full hit and a quarter damage for a partial hit, so there's really no point in that.

Still a victory though, even without that partial.

As they wrote above...good job, Baz.

I wouldn’t worry about problems following the BRF. It’s just to have fun. Double

Hi Pete! Yeah I missed that as there were a lot of questions asked & as The Strutter only had a Pilot I assumed it would have carried at least two bombs. However as you said it would have been a victory anyway.

Again our Eagles take a beating! Not a good day in the air for the Kaiser's boys for sure. We might have to get some of those fancy shooting Strutters for ourselves.
Well done Baz. Looks like an all nighter in the mess!
