    Legends: Guynemer
    Mission 1
    Guynemer's First Victory

    19 July 1915
    St Vincent, France near Reims
Georges Guynemer, a French World War I fighter pilot, achieved his first air victory on July 19, 1915. At
the time Guynemer was flying a Morane-Saulnier Type L aircraft with the Escadrille MS.3, also known as
the "Storks". He encountered a mixed flight of German aircraft, Aviatik two seaters and Fokker mono
planes, returning from a reconnaissance mission over the Western Front. Engaging in a dogfight, Guynemer
skillfully maneuvered his aircraft and managed to shoot down the enemy plane, achieving his first aerial victory.
This success marked the beginning of Guynemer's illustrious career as one of France's most celebrated and
successful fighter pilots during World War I.

    Et couic!

    14 December 1915

    Couarcy, France

Guynemer was flying a Nieuport 10 fighter as an escort for another Nieuport 10 Two Seater aircraft. They
encountered two German aircraft during the fight: an Albatros Two Seater and a Fokker Eindecker Fighter.
During the engagement, Guynemer managed to shoot down the Albatros Two Seater, killing its passenger
and causing the pilot to crash after diving in front of Guynemer's aircraft. While fighting with the Fokker
Eindecker, there was a near collision between Guynemer's Nieuport 10 and the Fokker. Thankfully, neither
plane sustained any damage from the near miss. However, the close encounter was intense enough to
bring an end to the fight, and both the remaining aircraft from the encounter returned to their respective
    home aerodromes.

    3 February 1916

    Roye, France

Guynemer successfully shot down two LVG aircraft in the Roye region during a single mission. His first kill
was achieved at 11:10 am using a Lewis gun, and then he managed to shoot down the second LVG aircraft
at point-blank range. However, despite his efforts, the third LVG aircraft was only wounded and disappeared
into the clouds, leading to the presumption that it was also shot down. Unfortunately, only two of these kills
could be officially confirmed, but this accomplishment brought Guynemer's total number of victories to 6. This
event highlights his remarkable skills and accomplishments as a fighter pilot during World War I.

    Mission 4
    Guynemer Goes Down?

On August 17, 1916, Guynemer's Nieuport aircraft sliced through the atmosphere, his sharp eyes caught
sight of an Aviatik. With unwavering composure, he squeezed the trigger, unleashing three rounds of ammunition
with pinpoint precision. The Aviatik, became engulfed in flames and spiraled towards the earth, a testament to
Guynemer's unparalleled marksmanship and piloting abilities.
The following day, August 18, 1916, Guynemer once again took to the skies in search of his next challenge. This
time, a Rumpler aircraft was his target. In a breathtaking display of deadly accuracy, he fired just two rounds, and
the Rumpler's engine erupted into a fiery inferno.
On August 20, 1916, Guynemer returned to the cockpit of his trusty Nieuport. Two LVG aircraft, emblazoned with
their ominous black crosses, appeared on the horizon. In the heat of the dogfight that ensued, Guynemer's aircraft
sustained damage and was forced from the air. However, this setback did not deter him from claiming two victories
over the LVGs. Despite these victories being unconfirmed in the official records, his reputation as one of the war's
premier aces soared higher than ever.

and looking for blood. Guynemer engaged a flight of four Rumpler C.I aircraft, along with
an Aviatik C.III and a German LVG aircraft. During this engagement, Guynemer would achieve

    23 September 1916

Guynemer shot down three enemy aircraft in quick succession, but only two
of these victories could be officially confirmed. Unfortunately, during his return
flight over the lines, his aircraft was targeted by French anti-aircraft artillery
(Flak Battery), which hit his aircraft's upper wing. Despite being hit and his
aircraft going into a long spin, Guynemer managed to regain control and execute
a crash landing. This incident marked the sixth time during the war that Guynemer's
aircraft was shot down. While he survived the crash landing, he did suffer a concussion.
His ability to shoot down enemy aircraft, survive multiple aircraft shootdowns, and
continue to fight with determination and courage made him a legendary figure in the

Last week's game did not go as planned. I used the wrong damage decks for everyone
and messed up the artillery. With that being said we will be replaying that mission at a

New for this week is, I am now broadcasting our games on both YouTube and Twitch. I will

    Legends: Guynemer
    Mission 7
    Guynemer vs Göring

    2 November 1916
    Bouchavesnes, France

This mission is an interesting and intense aerial encounter between Georges Guynemer, a
renowned French fighter ace, and Hermann Göring, who would later become a prominent
figure in Nazi Germany. While there might be variations in the details of such historical
events, the essence of this encounter is quite notable. In this particular encounter near
Bouchavesnes, France, Guynemer and his escadrille encountered German aircraft from
Jasta 5, which included Fokker biplanes and an LFG Roland C.II. Guynemer's actions during
the encounter, including his attempts to engage the German aircraft, his gun jams, and his
ultimate success in shooting down the Roland, are in line with his reputation as a skilled
and determined fighter pilot. However, as is common in such chaotic aerial battles, it was
often challenging to determine and confirm individual victories. Hermann Göring's presence
in Jasta 5 and was wounded on this day is historically accurate. Göring would claim that he
was wounded by a Nieuport, while Guynemer would claim that he wounded Göring just adds
another layer of intrigue. It's worth noting that in the chaos of aerial combat, pilots often
had limited visibility and faced the difficulty of identifying enemy aircraft accurately, especially
when they were engaged in intense dogfights. Disputes over aerial victories were not uncommon
during World War I, as both sides would often claim victories in the heat of battle. While the
specific details of this encounter may vary in historical records and personal accounts, it remains
a fascinating piece of aviation history, showcasing the bravery and skill of pilots on both sides of
the conflict during the early days of military aviation.

    8 February 1917

    Bouconville, France

On 8 February 1917 Georges Guynemer and his wingman, fellow ace Andre Chainat came into
contact with a German Gotha G.III. The Gotha G.III was a German bomber aircraft that was
relatively unknown to the French at the time. Bomber raids by Gotha aircraft caused civilian
casualties in France, which led to efforts by French aces like Guynemer to engage and neutralize
them. Guynemer's ability to damage the Gotha's engines before his own guns jammed, and then
successfully extinguish the fire on his SPAD, showcases his exceptional piloting skills. Convincing
the Gotha crew to land on the French side of the lines was a daring and impressive feat, resulting

    Legends: Guynemer
    Mission 10
    Guynemer Vs Udet

    6 June 1917

There are several different descriptions of the following event. Ernst Udet engaged in a renowned air duel
with a skilled French pilot, believed to be Georges Guynemer. While on a solo patrol (reportedly he was out
hunting Balloons), Udet encountered a Spad VII. The two pilots engaged in a fierce dogfight, with the
French pilot displaying exceptional skill. During the battle, Udet realized he was facing the famous Guynemer,
identified by the word "Vieux" on the fuselage. Despite damage to Udet's aircraft and unable to fire due to gun
jams, Guynemer refrained from delivering a fatal blow and instead extended a chivalrous gesture before
disappearing. This encounter left a lasting impression on Udet throughout his life. Some say they never met in
battle, and there are different accounts of the aircraft involved. For this mission, I am incorporating a bit of
everything to see what happens. Some of the 'facts' as told by Udet have changed over the hundreds of times
he told the story. The event has been reported to have occurred as early as 1916, all the way up to June 6, 1917.
Udet claimed that Guynemer was in both the Nieuport 17 and SPAD VII, and that he was flying a factory
Albatros D.III and was test flying an Albatros D.V. Since neither of these aircraft were personalized to Udet, I can
see where the French and Guynemer would not recognize Udet and might not have documented the event from
the French side. That said, I could not find any French records that mentioned the encounter. It was not until after
Guynemer's disappearance that any story of his chivalrous gesture started to appear in the newspapers. This also
leads me to believe that Udet revised his story over time to accommodate his public profile.

Last week we played a very successful game that pitted two of our top aces against each other that
also combined two of our campaigns (Udet and Guynemer). This week we are going to continue with
the Guynemer campaign with Mission 11.

    16 March 1917
    Near Erbeviller, France

On March 16, 1917, in the vicinity of Erbeviller, France, Captain Georges Guynemer, recently elevated
to his new rank, achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully bringing down three airplanes in a
single day. During a patrol near Courbessant, Guynemer engaged an Albatros C.II, obliterating it with
gunfire and tragically ending the lives of its crew. Continuing his patrol near Ebervillers, Guynemer's
escadrille encountered a squadron of single-seat Rolands. Demonstrating exceptional skill, he wounded
the pilot of one Roland, compelling a strategic landing behind French lines and resulting in the capture
of Lieutenant von Hausen. Another Roland faced the relentless firepower of Lieutenant Deullin and met
its demise in the skies. Before concluding the mission and returning to the aerodrome, Guynemer
targeted yet another Albatros C.II. In the course of this engagement, his precise gunfire ignited the
Albatros, leading to a catastrophic crash near Regnieville and the unfortunate demise of the enemy crew.

    What a Quad!

    25 May 1917
May 1917, Guynemer skillfully juggled various responsibilities. He devoted time to family visits, engaged in
developmental work on the SPAD XII Cannon in Paris, and actively participated in combat missions. Upon
rejoining his escadrille, Guynemer orchestrated a remarkable display of aerial dominance during one of the
war's pivotal moments. At 08:30, he successfully downed an enemy two-seater aircraft, swiftly followed by
another at 08:31, which he set ablaze. After a brief return to his home aerodrome to replenish ammunition,
Guynemer rejoined the skies, igniting two more two-seaters. Collaborating with his wingman, they effectively
repelled a squadron of six German Albatros scouts.

    Mission 13
    Bring out the Cannon!

    27 July, 1917

On July 5th, Guynemer initiated the maiden combat mission with his new SPAD XII. During the
encounter, he engaged an adept opponent piloting a D.F.W, and the precision of the rear gunner
proved formidable. The SPAD XII sustained multiple hits, including one in the radiator and another
in the engine, necessitating Guynemer to cautiously return to his aerodrome for essential repairs.
Subsequently, he temporarily reverted to his SPAD VII for a brief period, while also having to taking
time off to recuperate from a bout of bronchitis. On July 27, while patrolling alongside Lt. Deullin
and Lt. Battesti, they confronted a squadron of 6 to 8 cutting-edge Albatros scout fighters. In the
vicinity of Longemarck and Roulers, Guynemer skillfully downed one of the Albatros aircraft using
a combination of 8 bullets and a 37mm round from the newly installed cannon. This achievement
    marked his 49th confirmed victory.
