well, they had spitfires flying into space on dr who.......
OOOOooo! Spitfires in space....what a cool idea ! Of course Tripods and Spitfires just doesn't have the same cache....
So they are out there, but advanced enough to keep well away from Spitfire weilding organisms.

I recall a "2000 AD" story from many years back, when mankind finally managed to circle around the dark side of the moon, to find 90% of its surface decked out as a huge road sign (white disc, with red border and red slash diagonal), portraying "avoid - uncontrolled nuclear weaponry" or some such............
I laugh in the face of danger - then I hide until it goes away!
