The stripping on the one looks very well done. What is your secret. I tried to do a few nieuports with stripes around the fuselage and it was a disaster. They are still sitting there waiting for their stripes.

    On the virtual workbench...

While we have good Handley-Page O/400 models from Ares, we're missing the O/100, which did all the work from spring of 1917 until the O/400 started use in April 1918. I'm still working on the engine nacelles and various small details. The Wingnut Wingsš pages a great asset because they show little cockpit details like where the spare ammo was carried. On the other hand, now that I know where the spare ammo was carried, I'm compelled to put it in even though most folks will never see it on a 1:144 plane!

There are more differences between the O/100 and O/400 than I suspected -- for instance the rear cockpit cutout is diamond-shaped rather than square, and it only has a central machine gun rather than a mounting for one on either side. (Plus the ventral machine gun.)

The canvas is "German Off-White" by 'Misterkit' - a very very pale beige, but not quite white; perhaps pale oyster?

The turtledeck is "Sky Grey" - apparently most Aviatik C.Is had the upper fuselage deck painted a darker colour than the sides.
Sometimes the upper surface of the top wing was darker, too (but not on my two).

    Decals!

I used 'mehusla 1/144 Direct' black stripes on clear film - a guaranteed way to get the two lines parallel!
Four sections; top, L side, R side and bottom.

Decal sheet cut to include 2 black lines, outer edge trimmed close.
Apply one side first, then the top, then the second side - bottom last (if it's a little bit skewed, it will be the least noticeable decal!)

Painting those ships is not really that difficult, just time consuming and fiddley (gunports....lots of fracking gunports). Now rigging the critters is a whole different ball of wax though.

Yes! I have one of those saved for my collection of memory kits, I must have built a dozen of them before the days of one piece models . . .

I've always speculated that such a kit would make the application of wing decals a lot easier, but I'll let y'all tell me whether that is true.

Fortunately the D.VII has those thick cantilevered wings so there can be a reception hole for the struts without it going all the way through to the visible surface of the wings.

Not much done this month so far, other than tons of gardening/weeding by order of the Management. Managed to finish these for a Zona Alpha game once we can get together again. I've got a Fortress and Short flying boat half finished, and have just started a Storch (Shed Models, not to be recommended for those with sausage fingers ) and 3 HBM Lysanders. And my AIM order of P-36s and P-40s arrived yesterday so I better find time for them.

The assembly was rather tedious, the glue took too long at times to set . . . then they are super fragile, one good drop and it got re-kitted! Better wheels though! At the time it was the only way to get a DVII, so it was a way.

When I looked at these I saw that only the French and USN had them. French used them to defend floatplane bases. I wasn't sure of what color to paint them so came up with this paint schemes.

At the risk of being labeled a heretic....I recently became interested in a set of skirmish rules for the black powder period called "Sharp Practice." Here's the latest from my workbench for that set of rules for the French and Indian War period:

I have been refurbishing 1970's vintage 1/72 models from my brothers collections. Lots of cleaning repairing and repainting. First was the Dauntless in Coral Sea dress and then a similar time period Kingfisher. Now I have started in on a cool HE-219. The deconstruction did not start out as intentional, but since the parts are come off and not breaking off, I can use it to my advantage - this should be fun!Click image for larger version.
