Default BATTLE OF BRITAIN campaign (scenarios rulebook)

The Battle of Britain SCENARIOS RULEBOOK includes 7 scenarios.
It can be downloaded in the files section : https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/do...o=file&id=2664

    BOMBS OVER DOVER
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 3).

1- German side : One Bf.109 Jabo (played by Stan95) and one Stuka (played by myself), both loaded with a single charge of bomb.
The game played is a mix of the regular scenario (with 2 Bf.109) and the variant scenario (with 2 Stukas).
English side : played Automatic. 2 Firing Troop cards (blue squares on first picture), 2 AA Gun cards (yellow squares), 2 Target cards (red squares)

Bombing with Bf.109 : use rule ”Other types of airplanes as bombers” (page 40, Battle of Britain rulebook).
The fighter must drop the bomb at altitude 1 or 2, after a stall or a dive or the straight ending an overdive.
    Target cards can’t be straffed.
Aa guns are played automatic (page 42, rulebook). When an enemy plane is within 2 rulers range of AA gun, an A damage counter is drawn to check if AA aim is correct : if its value is 2 or higher, aim is correct and target takes a D damage counter ; if the A counter value is less than 2, shot misses.

2-3- from altitude 4, Bf.109 starts an overdive sequence (stall, dive, straight) to get to altitude 2.

4- After a stall, Bf.109 drops its bomb but the target center is not covered and damage is halved.
AA guns aims (black ruler) miss as A counters drawn are less than 2.

5-6- Unsuccessful shots of Bf.109 on troops and on AA Gun. Troop shot misses too twice.

7- Immelmann of Bf.109 which misses again its shot on AA gun.
Still at altitude 4, Stuka makes a first vertical dive, although its base partially covers the target card, rather than making a new approach to have better chance to fully destroy the target.

8- Second vertical dive, bombs are dropped from altitude 2 and partially destroy target.

9- Both planes get to altitude 1 and troop card is eliminated by a successful shot of Bf.109 which takes 4 damage points.

10-11-12- After 3 right turns, Stuka rear gunner fails to destroy the AA gun, but the pilot eliminates the second troops card with 3 successful shots.
Troops have inflicted to the Stuka 7 damage points and a smoke damage.
With no more bomb load, German planes go back safely to their side, rather than attempt an hazardous AA guns straffing.

Outcome : 2 targets partially damaged, 2 troops eliminated, 1 AA gun partially damaged, 1 AA gun undamaged.

Looks like this mission will have to be repeated as the targets survived. You did do some good damage and both planes made it home so a good job done!

    Nicely done, monse.
Looking forward to missions like this in the Battle of Britain Campaign we are currently playing.

    THE HARDEST DAY
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 4).
German side (player Goago) : one Ju.87 Stuka loaded with a single charge of bomb escorted by one Bf.109E, must bomb a railway station.
English side (player Monse) : one Spitfire Mk.II and one Hurricane Mk.I

1- First shots : both English planes fire at the Stuka (4 damage points) which fires at the Hurricane (rudder jammed).
The Bf.109 fires at the Spitfire (3 points).

2- The Spitfire (5 pts) and the Bf.109 (3 pts) makes a climb but they both collide with damage, as the Stuka and the Hurricane with no damage.

3- Stuka rear gunner fires at the Hurricane (2 points).
The German pilot of the two seater has forgotten to announce the bombing, disturbed by the collision. He has to make a new approach sequence.

4- The Hurricane performs a Split-S but its shot misses the Stuka, which fires at the Spitfire (damaged engine).

5- The Bf.109 performs an Immelmann to come back toward the English planes.
A successful hit of the Stuka at the Hurricane (1 point).

6- Another successful hit of the Stuka rear gunner at the Hurricane (5 points + fire damage, thanks to the aim bonus), which fires at the two seater (1 point + rudder jammed).

7- The Stuka performs an Immelman but is destroyed by a short range shot of the Hurricane.

8- A few turns later, the Hurricane is destroyed by the fire damage.
The Bf.109 performs an Immelman again.

9- The two remaining fighters fire at each other : a fire damage for the Bf.109 and 3 points for the Spitfire (an A counter drawn for Firing from above bonus, as the Bf.109 is at an higher altitude level).

10- The Spitfire performs a Split-S, while the Bf.109 performs an overdive which lets remove 2 fire token.

11- The Bf.109 performs an Immelman (the center of the base is on the edge of the map).
No shooting as the 2 planes are out range with a difference of one altitude level.

12- The Spitfire performs another Split-S and destroys the Bf.109.

During this game, the Bf.109 didn’t have many opportunities to fire at a target as both English planes concentrated their shoot on the Stuka.
English victory with one plane lost, while the German failed to bomb the target and lost their two planes.

    NEVER IN THE FIELD
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 2).
German side (player Goago) : two Messerschmitt Bf.109E.
English side (player Monse) : one Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II, one Hawker Hurricane Mk.I.
An English patrol must intercept two German fighters.

1- Over the English coast, the Spitfire (3 damage points) and grey Bf.109 (8 pts) fire at each other.

2- Both Bf.109 perform an Immelman too early and takes damage from the English planes (8 points at short range for grey Bf.109, 1 point for yellow Bf.109).

3- Aim bonus for the Hurricane which fires at yellow Bf.109 (8 points + fire damage).
Grey Bf.109 is out of the Spitfire fire arc.

4- The Bf.109 avoid colliding and fire at the English planes : 8 points for the Hurricane , 0 point for the Spitfire.
A flame counter is removed for yellow Bf.109 (1 point).

5- Yellow Bf.109 is totally destroyed by damage points of flame counters removal.
Grey Bf.109 performs an Immelmann but its shoot misses the Spitfire (one altitude level difference).

6- The Hurricane commits a planning error : it leaves the game area and disappears in the sea.
The Spitfire (7 points + fire damage) and grey Bf.109 (6 pts) fire at each other : Bf.109 is destroyed and the removal of 2 flame counters on the next 2 maneuvers eliminates the Spitfire.

Outcome : just 4 planes wreckage at the end of this no mercy game.

    BIPLANE OVER FOKELSTONE
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 7)
German side : one Fiat Cr.42 Falco, one Messerschmitt Bf.109E
English side : two Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II
An Italian biplane arrives to support a German fighter.
    (All players are Rookies pilots)

1- At the start of the game, both Spitfires fire at the Fiat (2 damage points).
The Bf.109 is late on the rendez-vous position to protect the biplane.

2- The Bf.109 fires at “P” Spitfire fires again at the Fiat (6 pts with 1 pt for aim bonus).

3- “P” Spitfire eliminates the Fiat (10 pts) with a third successful shooting.

4-5- The Bf.109 performs an Immelmann and fires during 3 consecutive turns at “O” Spitfire (8+1+5 pts), thanks to a clever tailing situation.

6-7- The German (1+5 pts) is hit by “P” Spitfire and then by “O” Spitfire which have both planned an Immelmann.

8-9-10-11- A few turns later, the Bf.109 can’t get rid of “P” Spitfire during 4 consecutive turns and is hit fourth times by the English plane with minor damages (2+3+2+smoke), all bonus aims are 0 point damage.

12-13- The Bf.109 (1 pt) performs a Split-S (its base center at the edge of the mat) and exchanges fire with “P” Spitfire (6 pts).
With 14 damage points cumulated, “O” Spitfire has stood away from the last engagements but comes back while the Bf.109 has been chased away.
Unfortunately, both planes fires at each other and the “O” Spitfire (5 pts) is destroyed by the Bf.109 (1 pt + left rudder).

14-15-16-17- The “P” Spitfire misses its shoot on the German fighter (which cumulates 14 damage points).
During the 3 last turns, the Spitfire is in the arc of fire of the Bf.109 until being destroyed.

Outcome : Axis victory despite a heavily damaged Bf.109 (14 pts).

Well that did not go well for the Spits ..

    Nicely presented monse.
    One question:
    (All players are Rookies pilots)
Did you mean the actual players are all rookies, or the pilots are all rookies?

If the players were rookies they did a bang up job.
If the pilots were rookies ....
4-5- The Bf.109 performs an Immelmann and fires during 3 consecutive turns at “O” Spitfire (8+1+5 pts), thanks to a clever tailing situation.
Rookie Pilots cannot tail. [Rules pg 23]

Thank you for your comment, Pete.

You are right, it can be confusing.
The four actual players were rookies WOG gamers, but the pilots were not rookies.
As it was their first WOG game (except one player for who it was his second game ans so played the Fiat), I didn’t take part to the game, only explaining rules when it was required.
Optional and standard rules have been used.

I thought that was probably the case - as I said, they did a bang up job.
The German player did a good job salvaging a victory when his Italian wingman went down so quickly.

Pity the player who got to fly the Falco against Spitfires.

    THE BATTLE OVER WATERLOO
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 3).
German side (Monse) : one Messerschmitt Bf.109E.
English side (Stan 95) : one Supermarine Spitfire Mk.II.
Note that this scenario normally plans two fighters for each side, one of the Bf.109 with a bomb load must destroy a target.

1- On the third turn, the opponents fire at each other at short range
The Spitfire takes 5 damage points and the Bf.109 2 points.

2- Both planes perform a Split-S and get at altitude 1.
The long range shoots miss their target.

3- Both planes perform an Immelmann and go back at altitude 2.
The Bf.109 is in tailing position.

4- Guessing that the Spifire is about to plan an Immelmann, the Bf.109 performs another Split-S in order to be overlapped by the Spitfire.
But then, the English plans a Stall and stands behind the German.
From a higher altitude, it fires at long range at the Bf.109 (4 points).
(We forget to apply the firing from above bonus)

5- The Spitfire is in tailing position and fires again at the Bf.109 (6 pts with aim bonus).

6- The Bf.109 fails to avoid the tailing and takes fatal damages (5 pts).
A fast and furious game and a large victory of the English plane.

Outcome of the 5 scenarios :
English side : 2 victories, 1 draw game.
German side : 1 victory, 1 marginal victory (ground targets half destroyed), 1 draw game.

Well done Monse. It is really great to see the campaign played out. I sadly have not tried any of these scenarios but now after seeing your presentation will have to play all of them out.

Thank you Pete and Peter for your kind comments and your rep points (even jammed points )

Note that there are 2 more scenarios in the rulebook :
Burst in the Dark, a solo game with one Beaufighter facing two He.111 played automatically (Waiting for a Do.17 or a Ju.88 to be added to one He.111).
The Blitz, a large fight in 3 rounds with two He.111 and several fighters in both sides.

So far your campaign is very close. It will be interesting to see how it finishes out.

    BURST IN THE DARK
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 3).
A solo game with one Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF facing two Heinkel He.111 played automatically.

    Rules used :
    - Aim bonus (BOB set rulebook page 20)
    - Multiengines don’t suffer the Disruption penalty (page 33)
    - Full Load (page 40), bombers at full load can’t play High speed maneuver (if two speeds are on maneuver card).

Note : unlike the official Automatic Airplane Movement rule (page 42), I remove one left and one right turn, to avoid the plane exiting the mat if two same side turns are played and followed by two straight maneuvers.
They also use the same maneuver card drawn, to avoid collision and cumbersome overlapping situation.

1- The Beaufighter must destroy the bombers before they exit the game surface on the other side of the width of two mats.
German bombers are at altitude 3.
Beaufighter starts at altitude 4 to get the Firing From Above bonus.

2- Bombers turn toward the Beaufighter but are out of range because of the altitude difference.

3- The Beau’ and green He.111 overlaps at different altitude.

4- With dorsal and rear guns (numbers 2 and 5), dorsal gunner (crewman III) of the green He.111 hits the Beau (2 damage points).

5- The Beau flies toward the white He.111.
On the green He.111, the Left lateral gunner (crewman IV) moves from Left lateral position 3 to Right lateral position 4.

6- Still at low speed, the Beau’ can’t have a target with the altitude difference (planning two high speed maneuvers could have let reaching the German plane faster).

7- At one level altitude difference, Beau (2 pts) and white He.111 rear gun (8 pts) fire at each other.

8- The Beau performs a Dive to get a short range shoot.
The white He.111 takes 16 damage points (including 2 thanks to Firing From Above bonus).
Beau takes 3 points from the Left lateral, Dorsal and Rear guns (Right rudder jammed + Crew hit : a counter is drawn to determine which crew is hit and it is the pilot ; the next maneuver must be planned before the bombers play their maneuver).

9- Beau takes 6 points from the white He.111 Left lateral and Dorsal guns with aim bonus.
The black fighter shoots at long range at the green He.111 (6 pts + Smoke damage)

10- The Beau fires again at the green He.111 (16 pts).
But it is shot down, taking 8 points from white He.111 Left lateral and Dorsal guns with aim bonus, and 2 points from green He.111 Right lateral and Dorsal guns.

11- Beaufighter has suffered 23 damage points.
Green He.11 has damage 24 points and white He.111 has 24 points.
Both German bombers have been severely hit but its has been difficult for the low maneuverable Beaufighter to stay on the same target to destroy it.
A new mission is planned with another Beaufighter, starting at the bombers altitude.

Some pretty heavy damage in that one.

The Beaufighter sure has some nasty punch at close range! By itself though it can't afford to be in the firing arcs of both 111s. Ouch! It did give 2x better than it received but it wasn't enough.

  21. #21

    Default

BURST IN THE DARK (second wave)
Scenarios Rulebook of the Battle of Britain set (page 3).
A solo game with one Bristol Beaufighter Mk.IF facing two Heinkel He.111 played automatically.

After the total failure of the first interception ending with the destruction of the Beaufighter, resulting in the escape of both He.111 bombers (message #17 above), a new Beaufighter is sent during a next attack.

Rules used (same as in previous game, completed with a few others) :
    - Aim bonus (BOB set rulebook page 20)
    - Multiengine don’t suffer the Disruption penalty (page 33)
    - Full Load (page 40), bombers at full load can’t play High speed maneuver (if two speeds are on the maneuver card).
    - Note : unlike the official Automatic Airplane Movement rule (page 42), I remove one left and one right turn, to avoid the plane exiting the mat if two same side turns are played and followed by two straight maneuvers.

    - Extended Crew Damage (page 21) multiple crew hits for a single crew damage chit.
    - Multiengine Engine Damage (pages 30-31) : an engine damage counter (with 1 or 2 on them) is drawn and determines the number of engines hit.

1- Unlike the previous mission, the Beaufighter arrives on the side of the bombers, avoiding a face to face, and starts at the bombers altitude, to perform short range shooting.
First shoots are long range : 4 damage points + smoke for the Beaufighter, from Left side and Dorsal gunners.
7 damage points + engine damage for the white He.111. An engine damage counter with 2 on it is drawn, both engines are hit ; no high speed maneuvers can be planned but the bomber is already at full load.

2- Beaufighter performs a Climb to get a climb counter and shoots at close range.
Same gunners of white He.111 shoot again with aim bonus : 6 pts for the English, 10 for the bomber.

3- Total destruction of the bomber (17 pts + a new engine damage that would have been sufficient to eliminate the plane as the two engines were already hit).
With dorsal and rear guns (numbers 2 and 5), dorsal gunner (crewman III) hits the Beaufighter (5 pts including 1 aim bonus point).

4- The Beaufighter flies toward the green He.111 at high speed.

5- At long range, the Beaufighter (2 pts + left rudder jammed) and the green He.111 rear gun (3 pts + crew damage) fire at each other.
Thanks to the Extended crew damage rule, a two hits yellow token is drawn, then the crewmen counters 2 and 3 are drawn : front and dorsal gunners are incapacitated.
Good news for the English crew !
(High speed maneuvers could have been planned on this turn and the following turns with no risk of collision as the Beaufighter had a climb counter).

6- At low speed, the Beaufighter makes a consecutive long range shoot on the He.111 (9 pts).
Left side gunner can’t have a target and guns 2/5 are incapacitated.

7- Still at low speed, another shoot on the bomber (13 pts), but left side gunner can return fire on the Beaufighter (2 pts).

8- Fatal shoot on the He.111 (10 pts) with no fire return as the Beaufighter is out of the firing arc of the left side gunner.

9- The Beaufighter has 19 damage points (for a 23 points resistance).
Thanks to the green He.111 incapacitated dorsal gunner, the Beaufighter has avoided being downed.
Destroying two bombers with a single fighter (even heavily armed) is a difficult task.
The winning conditions for this scenario in the rulebook is destroying at least one bomber.
So it is a full victory for the English side.
