“Hey Ray, what looks like a seagull but isn’t a seagull?”
“I don’t know Brian but I’m sure you’ll tell me”
“Yep, tally ho. Bandits 3 o’clock level. 2 each”
“Oh, crap. Here we go. Hope the pongo’s and the senior service appreciate this”.
The two Hurricanes hurtled through the Stuka formation firing at targets before climbing up and reversing direction to take them from behind.
Flt Lt Smyth’s Hurricane began to trail smoke!
A swift reverse and the two Hurricanes were hammering the Stukas.
The damage wasn’t one sided though.
One of the Stuka’s was badly hit, pilot wounded. Suddenly vertical dived dropping it’s bombs before levelling off and peeling away back to its base.
Brian got a good shot in on a Stuka and it started trailing smoke.
In the harbour troops were trying to get along the mole and onto either the destroyer of merchant ship waiting to take them off. Most headed for the destroyer, already under steam it was preparing to slip it’s mooring.
The Hurricanes kept hammering the lead Stuka’s but the rear Stuka swung in towards the others and got in a shot at Ray.
The Stuka formation turned for its bombing run. Ray and Brian turned with them firing as they went.
Rays Hurricane rolled over and went into a spiralling dive. He managed to get the canopy open and was thrown clear. As his chute opened he saw Brians Hurricane disappear in a ball of fire.
The 3 Stukas began their wailing dive, concentrating on the destroyer.
The destroyer was struck several times as the 3 Stukas unloaded all their bombs onto it. The destroyer heeled over and sank in the harbour. The Stukas, no bombs left, headed for home.
The merchant slowly sailed away.
