Thread: Gotha going, going, gone!

    Default Gotha going, going, gone!

If you saw my post regarding British use of the HP 0/100 as a gunship to combat the Gotha raids against England, you will recognize the inspiration for our get together last Tuesday night. If you haven't seen that thread, here is the link

    https://www.wingsofwar.org/forums/sh...sting-scenario!

After much discussion via email, we decided that it would be a 2 on 2 stoush, that the Gothas would stay and fight rather than run for home at the first hint of trouble, that the HP's would use an XA Deck and that the boom card would be worth half total damage points.

This resulted in an unbalanced scenario but a whole lot of fun with the expected slow-motion aerial ballet replete with collisions, though the collisions didn't end up being too serious. The end result was that both Gothas bit the dust but we did have a heap of fun!!

Here are some shots I took in between planning moves - I flew a Gotha along with Mark while Gary (Baxter) and Doug (Windy Jack) piloted the opposing Handley Pages.

Maybe not so much fictional. There is an account on this website about one HP vs 3 Gotha's

    Well done, Wayne!

And now, for an encore, we have Handley Pages versus Zeppelin Staakens.

Reminiscent of the Gotha-v-Caproni "Flying Jutland" we did at Enfilade many years ago when those birds were still new, but with the added bonus of "This Really Happened."

I have just been reading ANZAC & Aviator, which is the story of Ross Smith who is best known for flying a Vickers Vimy from England to Australia in 1919. However, he also flew BEs and Bristol F2Bs in Egypt and Palestine during WWI, and also a Handley Page O/400. It was interesting to hear a pilot describe what he thought of the plane, how it was to fly and what he did while flying it. When the war finished he flew the HP O/400 to India.

My wife and I caught the bus into the city to watch Australia defeat Brazil in the Davis Cup and we walked past this on the way from the bus stop to Memorial Drive:
