OTT DYM - Mission 12 “Ending with a Bang” - 27th March 1916 - Zenlizard

{Opening Notes: For this scenario, I read and re-read the briefing, and controversies which followed. After several, such, this is what I believe was Mike’s intention as regards the modified altitude rules and AAMG fire.: that is, a single altitude “level” can be gained or lost on any given maneuver card, the climb & dive cards allow multiples of such, the AAMGs have a range of 1 ruler to altitude 3. In that regard, all aircraft started at altitude 4, and mostly stayed there, unless it was necessary to drop down in MG range to take a photograph. I set out the flight pattern for any aircraft that was actively trying to photograph the target, and Albatros #1 full-time; all others were controlled by the d8 AI system. Primary photographic planes were Dinosaurier/Brückenechse in the pale blue Albatros, and Saune/Robert in the camoflage Nieuport. Back-op cameras were carried by Gharial/von Flugsaurier in the Turkish markings Albatros, and Pelletier/Uteau in the blue-ish Nieuport marked 2OU!}

Verzeihen Sie mir, dass ich nicht früher geschrieben habe, aber wir waren in letzter Zeit sehr beschäftigt, mit viel Kampfflug und wenig Zeit für das Schreiben von Briefen. Meistens war es Patrouille nach Patrouille in unseren robusten Fokkers. Die neuen Halberstadts sind immer noch rar gesät. Ich hatte mehrere Luftkämpfe, die alle unentscheiden waren. Vor einigen Wochen gab es ein bemerkenswertes Ereignis, das sich deutlich von der Routinepatrouille unterschied.

My Dear Parents:
Forgive me for not writing earlier, but we have been very busy of late, with much combat flying, and leaving little time for letter writing. Mostly, it has been patrol after patrol in our sturdy Fokkers. The new Halberstadts are still few and far between. I have had several aerial fights, all inconclusive. Several weeks ago now, there was a notable event, quite different from the routine patrol.

As you have no doubt heard by now, the French exploded several mines under our advanced trenches. Their infantry immediately attacked, but our reserve lines held, and then our own infantry attacked the French. It was therefore vital that our reconnaissance aircraft obtain photographs of the craters where the mines exploded, so we could plan a renewed attack on Verdun. And as all of us fighter pilots were busy, it became necessary for our reconnaissance aircraft to escort others on this vital mission.

I did see the start of the action, but most of the details I didn’t know until Leutnant Brückenechse gave his official report, and then Leutnant von Flugsaurier returned a few days ago-he was wounded, and nearly captured by the French. But Vizefeldwebel Dinosaurier flew Leutant Brückenechse to get pictures of the front lines, while Feldwebel Kurt Gharial and Leutnant Hugo von Flugsaurier carried a back-up camera, and Feldwebel Sebastian Krokodil and Leutnant Gustav von Schwantzpeitschend flew escort. As they approached the front lines, I saw several French biplanes also drawing near. But I was unable to interfere, as I had to dodge several other Frenchmen in my patrol area, as well as hunt for others in the clouds. Leutnant Brückenechse reported that they were a trio of the Nieuport biplane two-seaters, apparently also trying to discern the situation on the front lines.
{Note: Pic 1, everyone is still at level 4; in pic 2, the lead Neiuport dived to level 3, and took 2 points of damage from AAMG fire-I thought he was going to be able to get a photograph on this phase, but it was slightly out of range, had to wait until the next phase.}




Dinosaurier tauchte dann ein, damit Brückenechse das erste seiner Fotos bekommen konnte, sah dann aber den Franzosen auf sich zukommen: Die beiden tauschten Schüsse aus, während beide Flugzeuge ebenfalls vom Boden aus beschossen wurden, und Feldwebel Gharial schoss ebenfalls auf den Franzosen. Irgendwo in all dem fing das französische Flugzeug Feuer, was fast zu einer Kollision mit mehreren Flugzeugen aus der Luft führte. Es folgten viele Flüge und Schüsse, wenn sie konnten.

Dinosaurier then dove to enable Brückenechse to get the first of his photographs, but then saw the Frenchman coming at him: the two exchanged shots, while both aircraft were also being shot at from the ground, and Feldwebel Gharial also shot at the Frenchman. Somewhere in all of this, the French airplane caught fire, which nearly caused a multi-plane aerial collision. There followed a lot of flying and shooting when they could. {Note: It was ground fire that caused the Nieuport’s fire, while Dinosaurier inflicted total of 3 damage + smoke, Gharial missed, Saune also missed, but Dinosaurier/Brückenechse took 1 + a RRJ from ground fire. The Pelletier’s shot at Gharial/Flugsaurier caused 1 pt damage, whereas Flugsaurier’s shot at Pelletier/Uteau inflicted 5 pts damage.}








Feldwebel Krokodil kollidierte mit dem dritten Franzosen, während sich alle anderen selbst in Ordnung brachten. Der Franzose hatte Mut: Trotz des Feuers in seinem Flugzeug schoss er auf Gharial & von Flugsaurier und setzte ihr Flugzeug im Gegenzug in Brand. Sein Flugzeug wurde jedoch von von Schwantzpeitschend abgeschossen, der trotz der Kollision sein Ziel behielt.

Feldwebel Krokodil did collide with the third Frenchman, whereas everyone else sorted themselves out. The Frenchman had pluck: despite the fire in his aircraft, he did shoot at Gharial & von Flugsaurier, and set their aircraft on fire in return. However, his airplane was shot down by von Schwantzpeitschend, who, despite the collision, kept his cool.
{Note: Pic 7 is the collision, in pick 8, there are no shots, in pick 9 Saune sets Gharial/von Flugsaurier on fire, while von Schwantzpeitschend inflicts the last 3 points of damage + a pilot wound to Saune. Von Flugsaurier can’t shoot at Saune, out of arc, so shoots at Pelletier/Uteau instead, missing.}






Nach der Zerstörung des ersten Franzosen war es Zeit, weitere Fotos zu machen. Aber dann tauschte Feldwebel Krokodil Schüsse mit einem der verbliebenen Franzosen aus, während Veldwebel Dinosaurier und Leutnant Brückenechse mehr Fotos bekamen und von Schwantzpeitschend Schüsse mit dem anderen Franzosen austauschte. Dann, während das französische Aufklärungsflugzeug versuchte, mehr Bilder zu machen, flog Krokodil ihm nach und kollidierte fast wieder mit Dinosaurier.

After the destruction of the first Frenchman, it was time to try for more photos. But then Feldwebel Krokodil exchanged shots with one of the remaining Frenchmen, while Veldwebel Dinosaurier and Leutnant Brückenechse got more photographs and von Schwantzpeitschend exchanged shots with the other of the Frenchmen. Then while the French reconnaissance airplane tried to take more pictures, Krokodil went after him, and almost collided with Dinosaurier again. {Note: von Schwantzpeitschend’s gun jammed in the exchange, and he was wounded, to boot. His shots, along with the earlier collision damage were enough to force Rivol-Tissot/Hamot back to base.}






Es war offensichtlich, dass beide Seiten die Fotos für wichtig hielten: Dinosaurier und Brückenechse wurden jedoch durch Bodenfeuer stärker beschädigt, als sie ihre Bilder erhielten. Anscheinend hat der Franzose welche bekommen, während Gharial und von Flugsaruier weggeflogen sind, um ein paar Bilder von den bisher nicht fotografierten Zeilen zu bekommen. It was obvious that the both sides considered the photographs vital: but in getting their pictures, Dinosaurier and Brückenechse took more damage from ground fire. Apparently, the Frenchman did get some, while Gharial and von Flugsaruier flew off to get some pictures of the heretofore unphotogrpahed lines. The other Frenchman flew off, perhaps wounded or short of fuel.








Dies ließ nur ein französisches Flugzeug übrig, das beim Versuch, mehr Fotos zu bekommen, vom Bodenfeuer abgeschossen wurde. Leider und tödlich für Feldwebel Gharial erlitt er das gleiche Schicksal. Dies ließ jedoch keinen Widerstand gegen unsere Mission zu, so dass wir dies erreichen konnten.

This left only one French aircraft, which was shot down by ground fire while attempting to get more photographs. Unfortunately, and fatally for Feldwebel Gharial, he suffered the same fate. But this left no opposition to our mission, so we were able to accomplish this. {Note: the last French recon plane fell on the French side of the lines, without a fire or collision, so the two photos are recoverable. I ended the scenario at this point, only drawing three more A cards for Dinosaurier/Brückenechse, as that is what they would have to face, had I actually flown it to the end.}
