Thread: The Lone Fortress

    Default The Lone Fortress

This was a game played at the Cowards wargames club, Hoveton, Norfolk on Friday 21st February 2020.

A lone B-17F Flying Fortress escorted by a P-51 Mustang and a P-47 Thunderbolt was trying to bomb a factory. The Germans sent two Focke-Wulf 190D's and a Messerschmitt 109K to try to stop it.
Standard Rules were being used. Bill was controlling the American planes and I was controlling the Germans.

    The Americans.

After two moves the planes were approaching the centre of the table. The target was just 'above' the town.

The american aircraft flew straight on. The left hand Focke-Wulf angled slightly to the right but still exchanged fire head on with the Thunderbolt. The result was that it took 11 damage and caught fire. The Messerschmitt exchanged fire with the fortress gunners and the right hand Focke-Wulf sideslipped to tackle the Mustang head on.

The Thunderbolt turned left and the left-hand Focke-Wulf turned right. The B-17 flew straight on whilst the Messerschmitt turned right. The Mustang turned right and the right-hand Focke-Wulf turned left. It was decided not to apply collision damage but the overlapping planes could not shoot at each other. However the left-hand Focke-Wulf and the B-17 exchanged shots. The B-17's rudder jammed.

The Americans flew on. The left-hand Focke-Wulf continued turning right. More fire from the B-17 gunners shot it down. The Messerschmitt flew straight ahead. The right-hand Focke-Wulf continued turning left and exchanged shots with the B-17. The B-17's rudder jammed again.

The B-17 flew straight on with the Mustang but the Thunderbolt performed an Immelmann turn. The Messerschmitt also performed an Immelmann turn whilst the right-hand Focke-Wulf turned left and continued exchanging fire with the B-17. The B-17's gunners did enough damage to shoot the Focke-Wulf down.

The B-17 flew straight on. The Thunderbolt turned to the right to intercept the oncoming Messerschmitt whilst the Mustang Immelmann turned to come back and deal with the German fighter.

The Messerschmitt made a left turn and slipped past the Thunderbolt but the Mustang was now rapidly approaching. The B-17 plodded onwards.

The Messerschmitt flew straight on in pursuit of the B-17. It managed to pass the Mustang, which had turned slightly to the left, whilst the Thunderbolt was turning right to get into position for another attack run.

By this time Bill had realized that the rudder jams had prevented him from lining up on the target and because a B-17 turns so slowly he could be off side of the mat before he had turned 180 degrees. Also it would take ages for him to get close to a line on the target again. So we negotiated that he would abandon the bombing attempt and he could turn 180 degrees and fly straight back.

Meanwhile the Messerschmitt had closed to a position to exchange fire at long range with the B-17, the Mustang flew straight preparing for an Immelmann turn and the Thunderbolt continued turning right.

The B-17, having jettisoned its bombs flew straight for home at fast speed. The Messerschmitt turned slightly to the right and passed beneath it but because of the overlap the B-17's gunners could not fire.

The Mustang had Immelmann turned and the Thunderbolt had turned more to the right, so they could return and support their bomber.

Both American fighters turned to starboard and the B-17 flew straight to meet them. The Messerschmitt flew straight at full speed to get out of range of the Fortress' gunners.

The American planes converged on each other whilst the Messerschmitt performed an Immelmann turn.

The B-17 headed for home whilst the American fighters nearly collided. The Messerschmitt flew straight towards them.

The B-17 flew on the fighters would have had a massive crash, if we had been applying collision penalties.

The Thunderbolt flew straight on. The Messerschmitt broke to the left but the Mustang, which had performed an Immelmann turn was still able to shoot at it. The B-17 pulled away from the action.

The B-17 flew serenely onwards. The Messerschmitt turned to the right in an attempt to chase it but the Mustang turned left and continued shooting. The Thunderbolt performed an Immelmann turn.

The B-17 was nearing safety but the Messerschmitt turned right continuing its pursuit. The Mustang flew straight ahead and was able to fire at the German again, whose plane began to emit smoke. The Thunderbolt flew straight ahead.

The B-17 flew on but the Messerschmitt continued to chase it. However, the Mustang turned right, fired again and shot the Messerschmitt down. The Thunderbolt was coming up in support behind.

It was a clear victory for the Americans, who had shot down all the German fighters. The B-17 had not bombed the factory thanks to the rudder jams inflicted at a crucial point but most of the damage chits it had received were revealed to be 0's.

If I were to rerun this game, I think that I would reduce the number of American fighters to one and try to 'beef up' the German planes.
